Modern Warfare 3 dev: 'We don't care about sales numbers, competition'

Infinity Ward's creative strategist Robert Bowling says they are more concerned about the final product.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Bowling was asked if he and his crew are concern about the strong competition this year.

"Not at all, there's no buy in on that sort of stuff," Bowling replied. "We don't care about sales numbers, we don't care about competition, we don't care about beating anyone. Our 100 per cent focus is making a game that we're going to love to play, that we're going to be proud of, and that we know that our fans are going to play. To us, we don't care if there are three people playing it or 30 million people playing it. If there are three people having a great time then we've done our job correctly and we will be happy."

Bowling added that there primary focus has always been to produce a product that will appeal to everyone. "It pays to be extremely accessible, as we are with our audience, and make sure we're in the trenches, having conversations," he say. "It's one thing to look at statistical data; it's another thing to just get out there and get gut checks. More importantly, that's what Modern Warfare 3 has been designed as: a platform that gives you more options to control your own experience. It's not about catering to a specific type of player, that's what we've moved away from, and baking in your ability to really just play the game that you want to play and be incentivised to do that, however you play it."

Well, if they don't really care about the money, how about a little more innovation in the next Call of Duty installment? And no, I'm not speaking about the Call of Duty Elite add-on. Modern Warfare 3 is slated to arrive on November 8th, 2011.

That has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard, i mean they claim they won't even make a new game engine for their billion dollar franchise because it's not financially viable, and this just shows every single last thing in CoD is about simply maximizing profit for their shareholders, and yeah maybe Battlefield eventually gets to the same stage as CoD but right now they spending much more on development knowing they still won't make a fraction of the MW3 sales.

I have never heard so much billshit in my life. How can they be proud of a game that uses the outdate MW2 game engine with sub HD graphics... Oh right, because they will sale loads and make lots of money.

Also what about dedicated servers for console gamers, as that's what everyone is asking for.

black ops is all about money it still got world at war graphics

Sure he doesn't care, but Activision does.

@4, Black Ops has MW2 graphics, it just has a similar grittiness like WaW had.

nah i'm pretty sure it's WAW graphics, which only slightly modified the cod4 engine. mw2 is a truly updated version; the graphics are better for sure. look at the glass: in mw2, glass shatters much more realistically than in black ops. i remember them making a big deal about that in gameinformer before mw2 came out

so is it me or isn't this a totally different tune being sung from before. What I remember is COD developers/producers shouting fighting words at BF3. Now they're acting like they care, pff pathetic!

You know in a way Activision's attitude just shows they almost taking the piss out of their customers, cos they just showing no respect to us like some snooty posh fucker who thinks they better than everyone cos they got this golden goose laying billion dollar eggs for them, and i just hate when companies make easy money and start looking down their nose everyone else (Sony), now honestly CoD is a pretty good game but i'm just counting the days til Activision's greed collapses the franchise and they actually have to start working for their money.
