The fans that have been paying attention knew it was coming for a long time, but Metal Gear Online servers are shutting down today at 2:59 PM GMT. Metal Gear Online is the online component for Metal Gear Solid 4 and has had a bit of a contentious run, with some pretty crazy hacking videos for the online service showing up on YouTube.

Konami posted on their official site, "We have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online has to offer.

"It saddens us to announce that we have decided to end online service with the upcoming fourth anniversary of online service."

Metal Gear Online was actually supposed to come to an end last year, but Konami extended it "out of respect for our loyal fans."

And now the time has come. Bummer.

Will anyone around here miss Metal Gear Online?

I think MGO was one of the best online experiences that could be offered.

It has a great engine and the gameplay is realy awesome.
It saddens me that I cannot play online anymore.

I do hope Konami somehow recreate this for the Vita..

I'll miss it! I don't play games online much if at all, but I always loved MGO. There was a certain level of strategy that I thought was missing from other online multiplayers... plus it's Metal Gear, which is my favorite game anyway!

The hackers and lag switchers ruined the entire service.

I will miss this. Loved playing it. Only problem was playing in a group with spawn campers. If you had a group of like minded players it was a blast. Please please please do a MGS online 2. Could work really well as a stand alone game (like it was ment to be). Now if I can only afford a few MGS online arcade machines(google they look great)to link up.... I can dream.

One example of why I hate games run on external servers, after a few years companies shut down servers and you will never be able to play the game online again.

I will miss MGO, it was a pretty fun game for the first few months, would love to pick it up again and play a few rounds but alas...

I just wish that they would at least release a P2P patch for it or something...

FYI, Race Driver GRID on Xbox LIVE has been running for years now from a third part server or the fuck that is, however, on PS3's GRID's online mode is dead.

So yeah guys, it does matter if you want online game service you gotta pay to keep it alive. ;-)

Regardless of what you fanboy trolls are gonna say. It's the truth and the fact of online gaming on consoles.

They should have given players the option to pay for servers like BF3 to keep this alive. As for the campers, they should have exploded once camping behavior is detected by the ai.
