Media Molecule explains move from LBP

Media Molecule took to the centerstage of the Develop Conference as scheduled, and with it came yet another round of explaining why they're saying goodbye to the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

Buck stops at 2.

Said Mark Healey, "If you think of LittleBigPlanet as having a child, you kinda get to the stage where they want to leave home. It's kinda like that."  And while it's "really difficult" for them, as Alex Evans conceded, it's also something they have to do "to keep it fresh."

Although their next title won't be featuring the adorable Sackboys, Media Molecule makes it a point to reiterate, though, that they will be continuing support for the game that won the hearts of millions of gamers.

There are so far 4 million user-generated levels in the LBP franchise.

this sucks.... why pull the plug when you worked so hard to make a game sucessful.....

i think they could at least make a few mores games before shutting it down....

I think its a good idea to let a video game series die down a bit, its what makes wipeout so entertaining still and why its as if every COD game is the exact same as the last... people need time for it to sink in before another sequel.

no doubt Media Molecule's new game will be fresh and out of the ordinary.

I think other devs should take this route as well, like naughty dog. we all know U3 is going to be PS3 game of the year and every instalment of uncharted being different and new but with their team working on only uncharted for over four years, I think they will need a re-fresh after U3... maybe a return to Jak and Daxter?

Mm is a true dev team, thats how they all should be thinking, i believe ND is doing the same after uncharted 3, they'll support but move on, bungie is even doing it

I couldn't agree more. Nothing trashes a franchise more than saturation.

Bet we'll see a Sony announcement in a few weeks saying Slant Six or Bend studios has taken over development of LBP for MM.

I like the decision. MM is a great and very creative studio and them moving on means we'll probably get a awesome new IP.

I'd much prefer more new IPs than just sequel after sequel.

And it's not like they're shutting down LBP. The community is making new content all the time.
What could they really do for a 3rd game? More tools for user generated content? I don't think that would warrant a whole new game.

better that it lives on as a legendary series than to wither down slowly after everyone finds the series is just repeating itself.

good choice!

I'll be ready for another in a few years. I understand the need to step away for a while so we don't end up like that crappy CoD series, but as a fan of LBP I'll gladly play another full game with 'official' story levels if you know what I mean. Not sure what they can do to actually change the tools or gameplay. Hell maybe they can just release some more large add-on packs like they did with MGS.

That's a good decision they making because just look at Bungie, if they made another Halo they'd forever look like this totally unimaginative 1 franchise wonder doing nothing but Halo, just like what Activision has turned Infinity Ward into, and anyway what can you really do to noticeably improve LBP2?
