Kaz Hirai Expresses Confidence in Video Game Dedicated Machines |

Smartphones and multifunctional devices are truly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry. After all, as the technology continues to grow and develop, you're going to be able to play even more triple A style content on a device that's small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Whether it be by playing such titles on the go, or maybe attaching your phone to the TV for a more full-featured experience, the options are slowly becoming more and more endless as to what that little phone in your pocket can actually do.

This idea has forced many gaming luminaries such as David Jaffe to go on record saying that the upcoming generation of gaming consoles just might be the last one that we truly ever see. Kaz on the other hand had different words to say on the matter. In contrast to this hugely shifting model he claims "there is certainly a very large segment of the video game market that is interested in playing immersive games on a game-specific device, as opposed to playing casual games on smartphones," suggesting that the future of the PlayStation brand as a dedicated piece of hardware remains quite strong.
Is the history of game consoles coming to an end, or are folks like Jaffe simply speaking too soon?

Still... If there are still consoles in the future, I could easily see them being more like satellite receivers. No physical media to deal with, but programming differs.
