Jaffe: Where's the rape in Twisted Metal Sweet Tooth trailer?

Twisted Metal's newest outing is sure to court controversy, but this one that David Jaffe totally does not understand.

Reactions have spread against the latest Sweet Tooth trailer that came out for the game, with some even alleging that there was the element of rape present in it. Naturally, Jaffe would defend his project.

More than anything, he was very upset and puzzled that some people could have taken it that way. He took to his Twitter and said his piece about it:

"Wow - amazed/saddened/confused that people are getting 'rape' from the new Twisted Metal trailer. Wha?!? Is it Tooth attacking a girl? Yep! That's kind of what he does: he's a slasher in the vein of Freddy and Jason. But raping her?!? Where the hell are some of y'all getting that?"

A meaty discussion thus ensued in his thread, with one commenter saying that this perception can be founded on the media's sexualization of violence against women, to which Jaffe responded:

"The fact that many auto assume violence against women (violence against ANYONE is horrific) equates to rape I think speaks more about that person's views of sex and power and violence than our trailer does. Rape is a violent, non sexual act in most cases. Our media being sexualized should have NOTHING to do w/ triggering a thought of rape4 folks who don't go there anyway."

Here is the controversial trailer in question. Twisted Metal comes out exclusively for the PS3 on October 4th.

Wow people there was no rape in that video. People just think there was a scene that could have led to it, but in the end there was no rape scene in the video. If you are offended by that scene lets be honest you were not going to buy the game any ways. Try watching 5 mins of one of those police drama shows on tv they are x10 worse.

Chances are that she is just about to be hacked into peices, but the idea of possible rape is definitely present. There are several specific moments in that scene that would suggest rape. For instance, if he was just there to hack her into pieces, he would have just done so, no need to grab her by the arm. He had his blade out, but it wasn't in a position of swinging. The other moment that alludes to rape is that the scene is in slow-motion, which can give it a more sensual feeling. Its fairly obvious how people would think he might rape her. Perhaps if had the blade raised up high, about to slash, people would have thought differently. Besides he is a psycho clown, rape is not out of the question, its not like you have to be a sane normal person to commit rape.

Or he could be grabbing her to stabilize her a little bit so he can get an extra hard slice in .. I don't think it would've been any different if it were a man or woman

Very well could be, but it would be more obvious if he had the blade raised high, about to slash. Keep in mind that I'm not saying that he is going to rape her, but I can definitely see how people can get the idea. It's not absurb that people would think that. It wouldn't be any different if it were a man either, people might think he was about to rape him, then you would have a homosexual psycho clown. Theres also the possibility that he was going to take her and then torture her. Lots of different avenues, rape still a possibility.

Tell em Jaffe. He is so right though, people think of sexual stuff all the time these days. however, it is Twisted Metal, it is Sweet Tooth, what did you expect. This is an adult game for a reason. No need to defend yourself Jaffe, but I am glad you did, because it makes everyone who disagrees with you look like a dumbass.

This sucks, my question is how dramatic has the reaction been to this? if it not that severe it's not really a big issue. If people see this as grounds to censor/ban the game or anything like that than I only hope that the same judgement would be passed on a film or tv show.

at the end of the day the scene is simply violent and grotesque with no apparent purpose so... how up in arms can you get about it (im talking to the gamers defending it). It's easy to see how it could be interpreted as that (whether it was inteded to be or not) if your so up in arms about this I hope you are about more important and pressing issues as well

Lets call it GAME violence. No REAL people were harmed in the making of the GAME. Yes there is a BNE in a GAME house and yes the GAME character is going to terminate the other GAME character. Focus on real issues like the mutilation of the male/female genitalia.

the scene shows a guy touching a girls arm.. of course it is rape!!! she has been violated.. seriously, i think i'd be more afraid of the people leading to such conclusions from a short scene like that than from the killer clown himself :)
