Itagaki: Japanese publishers pretend to know what they're doing

Itagaki

Tomonobu Itagaki, developer behind Devil's Third and ex-Team Ninja member, had some harsh words to say about Japanese video game management.

"More so in the U.S. than in Japan, I think there are a lot of top management people who actually know how to make games," Itagaki told Gamasutra. "I think there are more people here like that, than in Japan."

"I think it's a good thing. Those guys know how to make games -- so they know it takes money to make good games. Those two aspects are on a direct one-to-one relationship. So I think it's very practical to be that way. In Japan, management people sort of pretend they know what they're doing. Those management people, they say, 'I love games,' but they don't know how to make them... It's the opposite of practical. It's not practical."

Check out what analysts have to say about the games industry in Japan.

Looking at the trailers of Devil's Third, I can only ask: Doing some selfreflection there mr Itagaki?

Your new game looks bland, uninspired and boring, count your losses, throw it in the bin and get back to the drawing board.

Personally I don't think it necessarily takes money to make a good game, I think he should look at some of the games that small teams of developers are making some PixelJunk games and things of that nature, sure they're short and downloadable but the quality of the game is still there.

Devil's Third looks like a slightly more playable version of Wet.

Even though that's technically a compliment; I would like to point out that a cheese danish could make a better game than Wet.

If someone actually paid for Wet...I hope they had some Wet ready:

I have to agree. The once grand Japanese game market has shattered in comparison to other countries. Even the once perfect Nintendo has fallen behind. Demon's Souls renewed my faith in the Japanese market, but Final Fantasy XIII broke it once again. Dark Souls should mend some open wounds, as should Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

natsume, treasure, and atlus made so many bitchin games over the years its ridiculous especially when things finally got serious with the NES. wild guns and shatterhand is still my favorite games while ocarina of time and wind waker are my 3rd and 4th
