Video game violence has been a hot topic as of late, and the results of a recently released Common Sense Media survey show that a majority of parents are uncomfortable with the content found in many games on the market.

According to the Common Sense Media study, 89 percent of parents polled in the United States believe that the levels of violence found in video games today present a problem.  One part of the study featured a video ad for Hitman: Absolution, of which 84 percent of parents deemed it inappropriate for showing during hours when children could view it.

As for the translation of video game violence into the real world, 75 percent of the parents said that violent video games could lead to tragic events such as the Newtown , Connecticut, shootings.  Approximately 60 percent of parents claimed that they closely monitor video games and media that their kids are exposed to, and 68 percent praised movie and video games ratings systems for helping them make informed decisions before purchasing items.  The study surveyed a total of 1,050 parents who have at least one child under 18 living at home.

I think there's plenty of violence in games but it's the parents' job to monitor their kids and what they play.

There is an age rating on the game if they think violence is a problem. Games such as Hitman and GTA have a rating of 17+. I don't think parents should worry about their children if they are 17 years of age. I also don't think parents should lets their 13 year old kid play these games and then complain about it.

It's interesting that they took the views of parent only. If they surveyed people without kids and singles they would most likely find a very different result. Non-gamers (which a vast majority of parents tend to be) are less likely to "get" violence in games, or understand the significance or it in games, and equally the insignificance of it in real life.

I agree with Enrique S that it's up to parents to monitor their kids. This cannot be emphasised enough in this day and age. Parents need to hammer home that violence in games is violence in games; it's virtual, and therefore ok. Violence outside of games is not ok. Simple.

its not like we have some kind of system that tells parents that their kids may be exposed to violent or inappropriate material or anything, like some kind of label with a maturity rating or age restriction to purchase the thing in the first place. hell, maybe they should even put a description of the title on the back of the games so the parents understand what the plot of the game is! or even pictures that demonstrate some of the gameplay. man, don't you just hate all those white boxes we get our games in that have none of that stuff?

come on parents, you claim that you are monitoring the content your children are exposed to and yet the christmas season is stocked with annoyed moms and dads whose tweenage boys (or girls) bugged the hell out of them for the next Call of Duty title and they finally gave in, clearly noting and seeing the gameplay footage and commercializati on of the title EVERYWHERE in the media. and yet theyre still uncomfortable about what their kids play. what a joke.

The only way, that what happened would have been prevented, is more attention from the parent.

There's nothing and no one else to blame but yourself in those situations, and the people who are against video games and guns are just blissfully ignoring what they don't want to see.
