Is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes too controversial to be released, and it if is released, will its mature themes make it too hard to sell?  It could be, according to the game’s designer himself.

Game designer Hideo Kojima used a recent roundtable discussion to talk about the upcoming release of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.  Regarding the game’s content and how it could impact its potential success, Kojima said: “That's precisely what I want to try to tackle with Ground Zeroes. Honestly I'm going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky.  I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn't sell because it's too much. As a creator I want to take that risk.”

Kojima went on to say that video games – Metal Gear Solid titles included - have not changed much over the past 25 years and still need to mature.  “It's always about killing aliens and zombies,” he said.

As for reaching sales goals with Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, Kojima noted that creativity is more important.  “I'm approaching the project as a creator and prioritizing creativity over sales,” he added.

Good, take that risk. Besides how can we know the entire game before actually playing it? It'll still sell but whether it'll be successful is another matter. People somehow think sales means the game is awesome.. or movies.. like how they boasted about Skyfall being the highest grossing Bond film or whatever.. like we knew what the movie was about before going to see it? The movie sucked however.

I'm pretty sure MGS:GZ will do better than MGR:R.. hack and slash games are so terrible.

I'm looking forward to its release and seeing what exactly they mean by taboos in gaming.

also it should be the next real metal gear game in the series... not that revengeance isn't great but it is a huge departure from the rest of the series.
