Insomniac speaks out about Resistance 3's PSN Pass |
Listed in: News, Games Tags: Insomniac Games, resistance 3, Sony

With all the noise surrounding it, Insomniac Games could no longer keep their silence and has now spoken out in response to the violent reactions brought about by this new feature. Senior Community and Marketing Manager James Stevenson was put to the task, and left the following post on their official forums:
"If you buy R3 new, nothing will change and the PSN pass is free inside the box. There is no 'monthly fee'. More specifics when I can share."
Alright, so that really wasn't much of an explanation as we would have wanted, but at least they're saying something. They also left this message on their Twitter page to address threats of boycott of the game: "Not buying Resistance 3 hurts Insomniac more than Sony. Will you not buy any future Sony games?"
Resistance 3 is coming out exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on September 6th, 2011. It was only a couple of days back that Sony confirmed the veracity of the Online Pass, which allows first-time buyers to access the online multiplayer feature through a Redemption Code.

Okay?... Well obviously. But Resistance makes it sound like it was Sony's decision to put this complicated feature in their game. I'm sure Resistance still makes the final decision, so they are to blame just as much as Sony.

it comes with the damn game when u buy it, firstly, secondly, Online Pass not Whole Game Passthe main game is on the game free even if u borrow or get it used, they have to pay to keep online servers running and they dont make you pay, so they wanna make sure the dont have theyre servers over weight for nothing especially cuz those people are not buying the game anyways,
u get a code in the game jus like medal of honor, and if u wanna ever play online, you put the code in and your able to play online FOREVER and its already in the game package jus buy it new damn

I also find it funny how there have been quite a few games that went free to play online recently. Hummm...
Ya, ya vote my comment down, I know you don't understand, or think I don't understand.

We had "faith" in Sony when they went through their difficult phase when hacked and stayed loyal... is this the price we have to pay for a free month of PSN plus??
I don't buy games which have online pass system as I think it's wrong and only there to milk even more money out of joe public for in some instances a crappy game!!!

On the other hand when will it be time to boycot? when all the good PS3 games need this pass?
we will need to show Sony (and publishers like EA) our disappointment of these type of online passes sooner rather than later.
p.s. if you don't know already, you can tell why I am like this if you read my comments on the other PSN pass topic.

Couldn't agree with you more. Content driven dlc as well as the games give people a good enough reason to purchase these games. The moment they start including some kind of BS method similar to the old Serial Key system on the computer is the moment people stop caring for whatever you put out (Personally I feel this system works with computers but not Consoles).

makes sense what ur sayin, but remember this. how much did resistance 2 sell new games compared to people who've played online? ill tell you that about 4 times the sales played online. how are they goina run the servers if everyone is borrowing and selling the same game to each other? they development money? naw, devs need support to make games and if ur goina play theyre game and not support them by buying it atleast let it b a demo and not the full game

Um... what? I didn't realize that when you lend a game to a friend or sell it, that all of you can access the servers at the same time. No: one $60 copy of the game allows one person onto the servers at any given time, so used copies can't possibly increase server traffic. For every person who bought it used and is playing online, there's somebody who bought it new and isn't playing it online, so how can you argue that they're losing money?
The problem is that when they sell these games, which are supposed to allow you unlimited access to the servers, they're banking on the notion that you'll play it for a few months and then never touch it again, so, while you've paid for unlimited access, you've only cost them for two months worth. It's sensible enough, but they simply need to accept that it's not always going to work like that. If you really want to make more money off a game, instead of screwing over your customers, why don't you make a better game so that people won't want to wait until used copies are available and they won't want to sell their copies to the used market. I've got several games that I bought when they first came out and that I'll never sell because they're just that good, but the games that are just ok, I'll buy used and then sell 'em when I'm done.

thank you one person who understands the concept

To me its not about the pre-owned games, I only own two (stuntman and WET) because I agree with what you guys are saying [buy new so devs can use the money to keep servers running]. Its because In my household there are two PS3's one for me and one for my brother, both PS3's have the same accounts on but if one of us buys a game with these type of codes on and types in the code, that code is unique to that PSN ID so the other won't be able to play online unless they use the one with the code's account (thus no trophies or individual online "level up").
"They" could add multiple uses of the codes but that would keep the problem they are avoiding. What I think they should do for these type of codes is to have it type in as a redeem code on the PSN store which will download a file (some sort of unlock thing like you can get for game trials) so that you can "gameshare" this download with up-to-5 (I think that's how much game sharing can go up to) PS3's.
by the way; for people thinking I'm going to boycot Resistance 3, I'm not. I wasn't going to buy the game anyway (good game, just not for me).

Much as people might hate it, it's already proven an effective business model, so we might as well prepare to get used to it for Sony too. Not like they'd change their minds to support their fan base - they gotta find some way to squeeze a little more out of us first.

If someone is just renting it to see how the online portion is, they probably wouldn't have been part of the online community anyway so I doubt it hurts their server population. And if they really liked Resistance they would have bought a new copy. So who really are the ones calling for the boycott?
I buy news, I buy used and I rent games, and I understand that I'm putting an unfair load on the servers for someone who didn't support their game as a full purchase and I have NO issue with either buying the game if I like it or paying for the online pass. If these companies that make these freakin' awesome games gain a little more cash for the hard work, long hours and dedication to my experience, then I'm absolutely all for it.
With that said, it's now time for the GameStops of the world to step up and offer the used game for less to compensate for the online pass system that will surely be in every game in the future.

They don't lose much money wise because if you actually think about it, to have a second hand game, someone must have actually bought it in the first place.
Someone like me who has very little income cannot buy the majority of these new games each time one comes out, so the only option for me is to buy second hand. So why should I suffer and not be able to enjoy the full experience? Because I need to live...? Because I haven't got a well paying job? No! Its not because of that... its because these companies ( I don't actually believe its anything to do with Sony ), decide to put this pass in because they want more money...
so what if I bought a brand new game for £40/50 and I find that the game actually has more content on and I need to pay extra just to unlock what was already on the disc...? Same rule applies as above.
I pay for a game whether it be Brand new or second hand and I expect it to have all of its contents so I can enjoy it.
I actually miss the days where you could buy a game or a console and do what the hell you wanted to do with it...
