Has Gaming Ever Negatively Affected Your Life?

Has gaming ever negatively affected your life? We all probably remember the story about the guy in Korea that died a few years back playing too much Starcraft. While most of us don't know people that have taken it that far, we probably all know someone that has let gaming take over their life to a degree that it has an adverse effect on them.

For me, the first time I had ever heard of such a thing was back in the 80s. A neighbor woman of mine actually played Super Mario Bros. on the original NES so much that she had to have surgery on her thumbs. I was too young to properly grasp exactly what happened at the time, but it has since actually been given a name - "Nintendo thumb." And now I'm getting old enough and playing enough games and typing on the keyboard enough to know exactly how that feels. Carpal tunnel, yippee!

I also knew a guy back in the heyday of Everquest that literally lost everything because of that game. He stopped going to work to play Everquest, so he lost his job. He actually tried to make a living by leveling up characters in Everquest and selling them. Well, you can guess how that went. He then lost his house/apartment (I can't remember which he had) and had to live out of his car and eventually move back into his mother's basement. I think that was his wake up call.

Video game addiction has not yet been formally diagnosed or recognized, but really you can be addicted to anything - as evidenced by people literally killing themselves over it. Do you know anyone in such a predicament or has video gaming ever affected you in such a way?

I remember Nintendo Thumb! That use to destroy your thumb for ages! Those sharp little curves on the A/B buttons use to dig in like crazy.

If I sit down to a lot of gaming for a day, the next, I get sore, achy, sensitive joins in my first two fingers on my right hand... could be carpel tunnel... I dunno. W/e it is, it sucks :S

A co-worker of mine can't play guitar hero anymore because his hand has MAAADD arthritis. If he attempts, it just destroys his hand for days.

Oh btw, are these new articles fan made? Cuz they're doing a better job at creating stuff worth reading than paid authors seem to be doing.

Also - I had to give up WoW. It wasn't really an addiction, but I realized that there were much, much better ways to spend my time than grinding instances over and over again.

Wow definitely negatively affected my life. There was a point where I would get home from work about 3 pm, log on and not log off till after midnight. Rinse repeat. Horrible lifestyle and the worst part of it was the people in my guild were always on before me and stayed on after me.... I gave it up about 6 months ago and haven't looked back.

Well i use to be addicted to counter strike and world of warcraft allot , i use to play 9 hours a day for like 3 years, but then again i was 11-14 so you can imagine how much free time i had , but when i got a few characters to level 80 and had the best armor , i suddenly had realized " wow! what a waist of time and money " so i gave up pay and play games and went into consoles , witch i still play now ( im 16 now ) but i feel like im growing out of video games slowly , i just feel like i cant be bothered to play anymore , ive lost that sence of adventure in video games . Now i barely play 2 hours a day and thats if i cant go out cause of rain or something . Dont know why , anyway my point is , i luckily had that wake up call nice and early before i took gaming too far and now i realize how much better real life really is .

gaming has actually helped me more then ruined my life. because of it i am extremely aware of my surroundings and can think 5 steps ahead. i also adapt faster to things if its real life problems or video game related. the only con is it use to trigger my seizures but i grew out of them so im fine now.

ruined my high school academic life. Thank God my "cool crowd" friends kept me from getting any geekier.

Ruined college and caused me to take 2 extra years (extra tuition) to graduate.

first girlfriend at 24, virginity lost at 24. But girlfriend is really hot Don't know if this is even considered negative.

Now working at an IT company. Life is alright overall. If it wasn't for video games, I could have had the focus to push even university and therefore a higher paying job.

Don't play video games much, just Starcraft 2 and random old school games I missed out.

# Gaming addiction gave me a new hobbyMatt 2012-01-03 18:48
I was and still am addicted to gaming. What irks me the most is the number of cheaters on multiplayer games. My new hobby is listing all the cheaters I come bump heads with to expose them. Since I started doing this over 20 people have joined me in creating several websites to expose these cheaters on. Here is a recent real life example of what we write.

xXNiqqa-BoyxX_01 is a cheater on Red Dead Redemption for the Playstation 3. This punk uses a modded PS3 console with an aimbot, a modified controller and several in game glitches. This is also his second PSN account. If anyone knows any of his other usernames let us know so we can expose this cheater. xXNiqqa-BoyxX_01 can usually be found in a posse with a number of known cheaters including svente2010, julytorres, elloko06_ and luigi_gamer. Some of these punks are also know to cheat on Modern Warfare 3.
