Guillermo Del Toro: "I want a game", not a movie

Guillermo Del Toro, Filmmaker and badass, announced earlier this year that he was making a survival horror game, Insane and the buzz behind the project is immense. To have such a visual director to go out of his way to make a video game despite how many projects he's making, developing, directing and producing for the film industry. Del Toro's style and his cinematic history are ripe for video games.

He was speaking to Ken Levine from Irrational Games and explained the stupidity and excessive nature of cut scenes and quick time events, saying "I want a game". He notes that him and his family are gamers and they spend countless hours in the video game universe but he skips all cut scenes. "I'm not watching a movie, f**k you", he said explicitly, explaining why gamers hate them is that you cannot take away the control at a whim as it draws players out of the experience. He likens the experience to advertising on television.

Del Toro is more than right and in his element when it comes to his quotes. I love it when he swears because more often than not it becomes quotable, fans of the Edgar Wright directed Scott Pilgrim film, know what I'm talking about there. While there is no release date for Insane, I'm sure it will be awesome when it finally comes out.

Ever since movie director Guillermo Del Toro announced his survival horror game Insane, there's been a lot of excitement about the project. That said, if you were hoping the game would contain movie-length cutscenes featuring Del Toro's signature style, you're in for some disappointment: The dude who directed Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth actually hates cutscenes.

Speaking to Ken Levine in an audio interview, Del Toro explained that he always skips cutscenes when he plays games:

"I'm a gamer, my daughters are gamers, we spend countless hours in the game universe ... You know what kind of gamer I am? When we come to a cinematic, I jump it. I go 'I'm not watching a movie, f*** you'. I want a game. You can selectively take control away from the gamer for a few seconds but don't render him inactive. Give him something to do, but don't f****** say, 'And now a word from our sponsor'."

Details like an actual release date have yet to be revealed, but earlier statements have implied that the game is due out in a couple of years.

I'm a "gamer" and I don't think there is anything wrong with cut-scenes, it;s just that some games use them inappropriately or excessively. There are games like Uncharted which is built around a typical Hollywood adventure and I expect cut-scenes to be in there. Thats okay, but then there's games like Assassins Creed which has cut-scenes that just seem inappropriate and long.

me too!
It's indeed two opposite views (from what i know) but still it's a matter of taste.
Kojima-sama is one of the best story teller in the industry and when he uses cutscenes it's (for the esential part) to densify the story, the background.
In my view he is succeding what most director's in the industry shamefully fails...
