Even with the $67 billion in excepted revenue, video game sales have been coming in lower than excepted dating back the start of the year. Video game sales alone have dipped more than 25% compared to last year’s sales. Console sales haven’t fared any better, showing a steep 45% decline, despite a modest in increase in accessory sales.

June alone showed a 29% fall off in video game and console sales, analysts and video game economists say that greener pastures still lie ahead as next generation consoles like Xbox 720 are set to hit stores by Christmas 2013 and revive the sluggish, but still highly lucrative video game enterprise. Video games and consoles are expected to deliver a robust $82 billion come 2017.

But as promising as the next generation consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are sure to be, as well as world of PC gaming, analysis agencies like DFC are confident that the lion share of video game revenue will come from online sources.  By 2017, online gaming profits are excepted to hit as high as $35 billion, compared to a seemingly mediocre $11 billion recorded in 2011.

could be due to A) crappy games B) recession C) people have moved on to tablet and phone games which I'm guessing these results don't cover.

Could all so be all the dlc sucking the life out of the gaming industry. Back in the 90's gaming companies gave most dlc away free and still made a good profit. Now a days they hire humongous crews to rush a game out the door in one or two years. Thus costing them a lot more to get the game to market earlier, bugs included cause they have more staff to pay and less time to debug the game. Games were better back in the old days when there was a lot more innovation and creativity involved in making the games. Make better games you will make more money, and stop milking your customers for every penny they have!
