2. Emotions in games
3. The Heavy Rain method
Still from the Game Developers Conference, we have David Cage this time talking about Quantic Dream's breakthrough, cinematic adventure title for the PS3, Heavy Rain. Not only does he reveal the number of players who actually sat through the whole game, he also took the event as an opportunity to sound off his frustration about what's going on in the gaming industry.

First, on the finishers of Heavy Rain. The Quantic Dream president proudly proclaimed that "72% of players who started Heavy Rain finished it." Now, that statement can be taken two ways. Considering that teh average completion rate among players of today ranges from a measly 20-25%, that is indeed an accomplishment. But if you take it into the context of how much drama and flair the developers went through just to make it as astounding as it looked, it's good, but not that great.

Still, alright, we'd hate to be the buzzkill here so we're going to congratulate them for achieving that. Given that the game was not as widely-received as people thought it would be, it sure is nice that most of the people who did buy the game actually stuck with it from start to finish.

If you thought that was all he had to say at the GDC, however, you're dead wrong. Cage also took the time to rant against the gaming industry in general, allegedly for the proliferation of "immagure games".

Said Cage in his applauded statement: "WIth most games and the designs we as an industry offer, we clearly target teenagers. Most games are based on violence and/or physical actions. What do you in most video games? You shoot. You kill. You destroy something with violence. Or you jump on platforms, you climb, you run, you do physical actions.

These two activities are what you do in most video games out there. The consequence of all this is that video games become, most of the time, meaningless. You have a gun and shoot at enemies to go through the level, to fight a boss... to go to the next level to fight more enemies and more bosses.

The game tells me I'm the good guy, although I'm a mass murderer -- because I have to kill thousands of people in order to be that good guy. Where's the meaning in all this? Kissing the princess in the end as your reward?"

he makes very, very good points! but if anything, his speech actually made me want to pick up heavy rain again. :P such a shame how much it underperformed in terms of sales. what do you think of cage's sentiments?

I agree with him about game "rules" staying the same. Heck, it has even become an open joke by many devs. Graphics had turned from 2d to 3d a long time ago and I think gameplay needs to change from that "2d mode".

I'm over 40 so I guess you could call me mature, & I did complete heavy rain! But even though it looks like an easy platinum, I couldn't be bothered with a second playthrough. Multiple endings got me playing games like silent hill multiple times to see the different endings to try & get a handle on the whole story, but with heavy rain, once you see the end, you know the story. On the other hand, "immature" games like CoD or team fortress keep me coming back time after time!

Heavy Rain finished by 72% if gamers... I guess I fall under that 28% of people who didn't. It might have helped if the game's first patch didn't corrupt all my saves just as I found out who the origami killer was.

Biggest problem I have with Heavy Rain.
*SPOILER WARNING. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED AND PLAN TO PLAY THE GAME*

The origami is always the same guy... Can't they just goddamn twist the plot a little so that all 4 playable character can be the origami killer?

True. I don't think they will change the game anymore but that's a good suggestion if they decide to make another game like this.

If you follow all the plot holes, that might be the case. Between Ethan's dreams, Jayden's tripping, and Madison's crazy insomnia, I wouldn't be surprised.

Wunjo_69 I'm in the same boat as you. I'm also 40 and feel the same why. Sure there are a lot of FPS out there but that's what is in. I remember when it was Mario Bros. then Street Fighter. Now it's FPS. As for Heavy rain I did finish it. I'm a big C.O.D. fan but I do play other games.

Its funny how all the mature games are still geared towards kids. I wish we had more games like Heavy Rain otherwise the videogame industry will never been taken seriously as art.

I'm 17 and this was the first game I bought on my 17th birthday. I finished it in like 3 days after school on hard. I gotta say this game is Amazing and really has a lot goin for it its just I wish there was more to it. The trophies are the only thing worth going for after the game.

First of all, this article looks like it was written by a child.
Spelling and grammatical errors everywhere.

Secondly, I fully agree with the statements about the linear feelings that writers are trying to evoke. I have had this same though for YEARS.
Well done for him coming out and saying this, but also having something to back up his cause (Heavy Rain, Fahrenheit/ Indigo Prophecy).

If you didn't like this game, better start organizing your suicide.
