GameStop: Used Games sales helps game industry |

So according to the US retailer, second hand sales are actually a highly beneficial part of the game industry. GameStep Exec VP, Michael Mauler, such an unfortunate last name, believes that second hand sales benefit retailers, publishers and developers, all around. The main argument he produces is it's driving in sales and keeping customers engaged, marketing-wise with yearly franchises, so the average non-gamer, doesn't lose interest.
Whilst I do admit, big retailers, here in Australia at least, have more often than not steered a customer or two in the wrong direction, places such as EB Games and GAME, have always been helpful and nerdy when it comes to informing even the most casual parent and player about what is good, what works with what and I value that a lot when it comes to introducing people to a new system or game. Big game companies sure as hell don't do it, unless it's in the tutorials or in a big advertising campaign (i.e. Wii Would like to Play)
Mauler was speaking with Edge and explained that without the opportunity to cash in on older titles, some gamers would miss out on classics and many gamers wouldn't really be buying new ones. "I can understand the feelings [but] we've sat down with developers and publishers and really gone through the data. "I personally think there's a lot of benefit to the publisher" Mauler has a good point with being able to play classic games...except for those incredibly smart developers who have started to release HD packs for games.
"A great example is sequels, where there's a large percentage of people who are just not going to spend $60 every single year without being able to do something. They'll look at their shelf and see ten FIFAs, Pro Evos or Maddens...[and] being able to take the older one and do something with it in order to buy the next version is really important to consumers. That drives new sales quite a bit."
Mauler is concerned with getting new customers involved with a series which they may not have invested in at full price also pushes sales of DLC, but initiatives such as EA's Online Pass, which encourage direct payments to the publisher in return for access to online modes and features, aren't particularly effective. Interesting how he only really mentions sports games published by EA though...
Mauler's thoughts are unlikely to coincide too closely with those of publishers, whom I'm wondering who he's actually spoke to, given the supposed interest he represents and discusses. However, he also makes a point about scheduling conflicts with game releases and which may find more sympathy amongst industry figures, despite its stronger phrasing. "We the industry have done it to ourselves," Mauler says of the second hand market. "We take all the great releases and put them all in a two-month period.
"If you're an FPS fan, you look at all the games that are coming out this fall, and you'd have to be pretty wealthy to buy all of them. There are going to be people who buy Battlefield 3, and they're not going to have €60 for at least another month or two...they're all coming out so close together." The christmas rush this year will be spectacular with so much coming out, but we'll see how GameStop feels next year with the release of more cloud based services and online gaming.

if i for example went out and bought a brand new online game like mw3 on release day then the online element for that said disc has been paid for by me for its lifespan, its irrelevant what happens to that disc afterwards wether i play it or pass it on its still paid for and has given them their cut...
now most people that trade or buy second hand games are doing so because they simply cant afford to buy every new game at full price., online passes are just an act of pure greed and there's no justification for them expecting more than one person to pay for the online mode of one disc.
thanks

reminds me pretty heavily of the always on internet connection drm that a lot of pc companies are trying to go for.

The code wasn't even used!
That's what makes it annoying. There's no way for pre-owned sellers to verify if a code has been used or not.

Best way to slow used game reselling down is, in my opinion, stop producing the same crap (with oh so cool new features!1) every year and start making games worth remembering (again).

Online passes are just greed, these are not needed at all.

It must be Gamestop not Gamestep..

the industry has so many options when it comes to used games...
1) revoke the license... game software is not sold to consumers _EVER_ it is licensed. gamestop would then be selling unlicensed copies... legally actionable.
2) stop selling to retailers that also sell used... this worked for street date breaking, when it was the last recourse of the indie shops...
that's two and i'm a nobody... ask a lawyer.
to the commentators: stop defending used games. also stop buying crap... you want cheaper... rent, borrow, hell pirate to try a game... it's not rocket science. but i guess your all too lazy for any of that... well laziness costs.
and to the guy claiming to return one game for another... since when? no retailer has let you return an opened game for anything other than a copy of the same game since i started buy them 15yrs ago... i know for a fact you can't return a game for anything approaching full value at gamestop without buying into their other "rewards" program or specific offer and even then it rarely happens.

That's worse than pre-owned by a mile! Millions of copies get distributed around and NO-ONE gets any money. Not developers, publishers or the shops.
I could fully understand all the online passes if the companies weren't already mega rich. But the truth is, they are. It's pure corporate greed and they know that dum suckers will pay the extra money.
