GameStop Unsurprisingly Claims People won’t Buy Consoles that Don’t Play Used Games |

Hey, you know who’s probably really pissed about the rumors that the Xbox 720 and PS4 won’t play used games? GameStop, the retail outlet that bases 90% of its business on bilking customers out of their precious titles and selling them at a ridiculous premium to gullible morons!

GameStop’s entire financial model depends upon the free flow of used games in and out of its store, and rumors that the next generation of gaming consoles won’t allow for the play of pre-owned titles are starting to hurt its bottom line. So it should come as no surprise that the company is claiming that the great majority of gamers simply won’t buy consoles that don’t play used games.
Here’s CFO Rob Lloyd, toeing the company line:
“Consumers want the ability to play pre-owned games, they want portability in their games; they want to play physical games. And to not have those things would be a substantial reason for them not to purchase a new console. I think it was 60% of customers who said they wouldn’t buy a new console [if it blocks used games].”
As much as I love hating on GameStop, the dude is right. Most people do not want to buy a games console that only plays brand new games—how the hell do you borrow games from friends or rent them from RedBox? Still, the source is suspect since GameStop has so much invested in the market.
Thoughts?

Instead of punishing the used game industry they should simply embrace it and squeeze a little out of it instead. Seriously, it's not that fucking complicated. I swear the biggest morons run the largest companies.

Personally I hate Gamestop and their like. With studio/publishers shutting down over 1 or 2 failed games, they need their income to come to them. Gamestop is just lining its pockets while robbing the video game industry. I absolutely hate walking in 3-4 days after a game comes out and seeing more "used" copies at $10 off than sealed new copies.
In the music or movie industry this would have been shut down long ago. Blockbuster ran into the same problem before bankrupcy as studio's no longer wanted to sell them videos at reduced price, when they just turned around and flooded the used market.

People are going to think before they buy games now, knowing they can't return it or trade it, or even lend to friends.

With them implementing this kind of system the "New" games price is gonna take a pretty big leap. Don't get me wrong I buy new just as much as I buy used games, but taking that decision away from me on whether I want to or not angers me pretty heavily.
