First PS3 jailbreak raid ensues in South Africa

South African cops have started cracking down on PlayStation 3 jailbreak activities. As reports have it, the raid took place a couple of days back Johannesburg, in a residential property.

Finance and Special Operations Director, Jacques Botha, revealed that they did nab a foreign national. The unnamed suspect "has been arrested and will remain in custody until he appears in court at the Specialized Commercial Crims Court in the next couple of days. It is the first PS3 circumvention arrest in the world."

As it turned out, the South African Police Service's Commercial Crime Unit acted on the raid upon receiving various criminal complaints from the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT).

Aided by the SARS Computer Forensics Lab, the raid yielded the following items from the said Parktown home: PS3 consoles and harddrives worth R100,000, pirated PS2 games, original PS3 games, jailbreak USB devices, state of the art computers, and circumvention software packages.

Botha also guaranteed that this is but the first of the many more raids to come around the world, as goverments all over step up to prove their dedication to stop software piracy.

Sony experienced a major setback in operations back in late April as they experienced a massive security breach, bringing down the PlayStation Network for a long month and a half. As recent rumors would have it, the company is now looking to come out with a new PS3 model that will feature special anti-piracy measures. In hindsight, they are now saying that the whole traumatic experience was actually a "great learning" one.

By that logic the police should NEVER uphold any laws except drug trafficking.

Sure, that makes sense.

For as long as there are drug dealers, screw everything else only work on them. All other laws are crap compared to drugs and as we all know drug dealers get arrested every minute of the day 7 days a week, 365 days a year so there wont possibly be any time to work on anything else.

Well, also there's the question of: "Who is the government to tell US what we can and cannot do?"

People that are 30 years old, should be mature enough to do what ever the fuck they want, so if they want to do drugs, then do drugs.

One thing they need to do in the states is make weed legal, and alcohol illegal.

I dont have the numbers, but the ratio between the number of people killed by drug driving compared to the number of people that drink and drug, and people high on weed, compared to the people that drive while high. Weed causes less accidents!

Alcohol makes you intoxicated that you do stupid, immature stuff.

Weed only makes you hungry.

You do realize that DUI and DWI include alcohol and drugs right? If you are high on pot and run through a red light then you can be arrested for DUI/DWI.

So whatever numbers you have or find I'm guessing are pure BS.

I didn't know owning PS3 consoles, state of the art computers, or original PS3 games was a crime.

I live in South Africa and have felt firsthand the impact of piracy on my own video game business. These guys are just trying to do business on the cheap by cutting corners, and giving people access to content because the game industry pricing model is too high. There needs to be some balance in the business model of console games, and i don't suggest anyone get into the game retail business until that balance happens.
