Finnish consumer board says Sony should pay for OtherOS removal |
Listed in: News Tags: news, otheros, Sony

Sony has taken a lot of flak over the removal of the OtherOS feature from the PlayStation 3 home video game console via a mandatory firmware update. The reason for the removal was widely stated by Sony to be due to security concerns.
The removal of the feature is at the heart of one Finnish consumer's complaint, which the Finnish Consumer Complaints Board has recommended in favor of.
As AfterDawn reports, the CCB said that "the removal of OtherOS crippled console features that were present at the time of purchase, and agreed that consumers should be compensated." The CCB has since recommended that the complainant be paid € 100 by the console's manufacturer and seller. The complainant originally wanted € 150 in damages.
It should be noted that although the CCB can't enforce their recommendation, it can be taken into consideration by Finnish courts.

Using OtherOS or not isn't what's being questioned here. It's the moral of removing something that the console was advertised as having.
People have every right to sue for false advertising so why shouldn't we be able to do the same for removal of features on something we've paid for?
We shouldn't have been given the choice of OtherOS OR online gaming. The PS3 was advertised way before launch as having OtherOS and was launched with it so it should NOT have been removed.

but as long as a few people get on their high horse its all okay.

90% don't even care about the otheros removal.

Again, it's not that they removed OtherOS, it's that they removed something that was there from launch. If Sony thought it was a potential security issue, they should have plugged the security hole, NOT removed OtherOS.
It would be like disabling the USB slots as people were using them for the PSJailBreak. Even if you never used the USB for the Eye camera or anything else, you'd still be pi**ed wouldn't you?
The only reason people don't care about OtherOS is because they never intended on using it. Still doesn't make it right to remove it.

let's say your house had a tree beside it which could fall over on your house causing damage. would remove the tree or keep it knowing it could seriously damage your house just because it came with the house when you purchased it.

And again, it isn't about whether people used OtherOS or not, it's about making an example of Indian-giver corporations.

No, seriously, we can just guess the reason. Might even be possible that it was easier to remove OtherOS than patching it because the flaw was big.

If you purchase a house knowing full-well a tree might slam through it, you buy insurance. Removing it may well detract from the house's sale value, especially if it's a village property.
The same with removing OtherOS. People paid top-whack for launch model PS3s only for them to lose market value as they no longer do 100% of what they were originally capable of doing.

I think your analogy to a USB port is invalid. disabling a hardware feature not equal to removing the ability to instal your OS.
It is not right to remove an advertise feature but again it is not right to bitch about something I don't care about just to hope for a compensation on something didn't even made real damage to me.
that's my moral.

Fair enough in future hardware revisions (ie the slims not having it). That I can understand as they're not hadvertised as having it.
I mean put it this way then, what if someone found an exploit in the java via blu-ray? Would Sony be justified if they removed java and said "well it's not needed to play the blu-ray, only for bonus content"? They wouldn't remove it, they would patch it and block the security leak. Why did they not simply do that with OtherOS?
If people don't stand up to big-ass corporations like this, then they'll continue to walk all over us and take us for every penny we have. It's about time consumers started growing balls and demanding what we've paid for.

If Sony want us to 'rent' the console so they have ultimate control - then they can choose this business model. The problem with this is that:
1. They would be responsible for any hardware/software issues which you can just send back to be fixed
2. Most people would not buy/rent the console as it would be far more expensive than it is.
Sony basically want to have their cake AND eat it - they want full control whilst we as consumers take all the risk.

- Release new hardward .Call it Playstation 3.5 since it won't add any new features anway.
Make sure the installed original firmware DOESN'T include internet features or play station access. (But the first update made immediately available after launch does).
After this, Sony can remove any other feature it wishes, at it's not a matter of 'x' or 'PSN access' any more after that, as PSN was never an 'advertised feature' of the original console.
I guess was I'm trying to say is that (in general) no one jumps up and down cheering when a new feature is added to a product after launch (for some reason it's expected), but god forbid a company remove a feature, for any reason.
Because after they do, everyone is up in arms about it, when they (as individuals) made use of the feature or not.
I was being facetious with my recommendation to Sony, by the way.

^ Just like Sony's love and appreciation of their consumers.
