Final Fantasy XIII-2 Opens to dismal sales |

FFXIII-2 came out last week in Japan to the tune of half a million sales which is around a third of the sales the original XIII saw just over two years ago. The game has a large amount of pre-orders in the west due to the international popularity but people are wondering if it will be enough for Square Enix to reign in the new year?
While anyone who makes games would love that amount to shift the game costs a couple million to make and half a mill is quite a low sale count when shooters are blowing up the market with almost a billion dollars in just a matter of weeks. A recent word from Sony has said that gamers are more willing to embrace US games than ever before in Japan, but this could turn the tides for the games industry's own homegrown development.
Squenix's franchise of FFXIII Titles continues into the new year with FF Versus XIII, and this recent lack of sales comes only months after Square said that their brand has been "greatly damaged" due to the troubled release of the MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. While I think Square have been consistent with their releases (sans MMO's) I think trying out a new IP in the new year may be their only option. Even straying from the RPG genre entirely could be an interesting move. Imagine if they did a side-scroller or a shooter?

You do realize Squere Enix just released Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is a shooter, right?. But honestly, Square Enix create tons of games, most of which are not even RPGs at all. Also, FF XIII-2 will be big when it reaches the continent where FF games are big hits - Europe.
I don't think Square Enix should stop making JRPGs. I just think they need to make more JRPGs until they finally reachs an enormous hit. Also releasing Versus won't hurt.

FF titles are internally developed by SE's own studios - that's theirs. So they really haven't 'done' their own shooter yet, although I have doubts they can pull off an instant CoD if they did.

As for this game it just came out and needs time. It doesn't need to sell millions on the first day to count. I've bought hundreds of games for my PS3 and Wii yet hardly any were gotten within the first week.

Oh, and stop conflating quality and enjoyability. I'm more than happy to dish out a fiver on a greasy kebab after a night out because it tastes awesome, regardless of the quality of the meat itself. According to your logic, though, I'm actually DELUDING myself into thinking I'm enjoying the kebab because I think that's what people expect of me.

Anyway. I think they are missing the point the sales of this game are bad because the original game was crap. The worst FF hands down.

GOOD. I hope it continues to sell poorly and sends square a message that XIII was completely sub-par and we don't want more of it. The fact they are trying to squeeze more sequels and spinoffs out of it is ridiculous. The majority of gamers DON'T WANT MORE XIII.
