Famitsu shines spotlight on Dark Souls details |

Dark Souls developer From Software has shared some details regarding the game with Japanese video game news mag Famitsu in the last issue's Flying Get column. In addition, Namco Bandai has also let out a few new screenshots to complement the newly revealed details.

One of the main reveals was the game's Campfire system. These areas are scattered all over Dark Souls' massive game world and serve to give players a base of operations where they can recover health and fill up on a healing material called Est. The latter can be placed in the jar for those times when you need to recover quickly while you're out exploring. If you have the monk spell "Recovery Miracle", you can touch the fire and use it to heal yourself.
Once you come across a new campfire you are free to explore further. These waypoints alo serve as a respawn area for when you die, something that will without a doubt happen a lot. Playing online will also let you see other players who are staying in the same campfire area as you.

Since From Software is really dedicated to making Dark Souls a lot harder than its spiritual predeessor, Demon's Souls, players will need a lot of protection against the many enemies they come across. For a quick defense buff, there's a spell that changes your character's ody into iron. You'll gain a defense boost, but as a result you'll also become slower.

Speaking of things made of iron, Dark Souls also features a cursed NPC called the Black Iron Knight. Players can summon this NPC if they need help against partiular nasty enemies. It seems there are certain limits and requirements to when they can be summoned, however. Other NPCs, like a certain "mysterious holy woman" that has yet to be fully revealed, will be encountered as players explore the game world.
These spells and summons will surely be really helpful if you go up against the massive enemies in Dark Souls, like the bone dragon revealed by From Software below. Enemies will try their hardest to kill you and some will even follow you up ladders when you try to escape. If this happens, you can just kick your pursuer to make them fall off.

From Software and publisher Namco Bandai plan to release Dark Souls by the end of the year. The game was confirmed for a stateside release along with From Software's other project, Armored Core 5. It'll be available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
