DLC Sales Are Going Up, Up, Up

Downloadable content has become an integral part of the games industry. What first started as a way to get little bits of extra content has turned into a full-fledged marketing plan for developers, with DLC ideas incorporated directly into the initial game design. Some critics of DLC even argue that developers are pushing out half-finished games and leaving the rest to downloadable content in order to bilk gamers out of extra cash.

Whatever your opinion on DLC (mine is that I don’t mind it when it’s in addition to an already great game), it looks like gamers are warming up to paying a few extra dollars to lengthen the life of their digital products. A recent study by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research indicates that 51% of console owners purchased DLC in the last 12 months, compared to only 40% during the previous year.

Roughly speaking, that means around 20 million North American (the study doesn’t cover Europe or Asia) gamers have purchased some form of DLC, whether it be map packs, weapon upgrades or extra story content. These purchases amounted to around $875 million for developers and publishers, with the EEDR estimating DLC sales will top $1 billion in 2012.

One strange thing indicated by the organization’s graph is that the majority of people that have avoided DLC, a whopping 47%, did so out of “privacy” concerns. I don’t really understand the logic, assuming those people are already linked into PSN or Live (maybe they aren’t). Another major factor was the complete lack of a return policy, which makes a little more sense to me. I’m curious to know how many teen players were unable to buy content they wanted due to parental controls, but there’s no data in the chart to help with that.

Did you spend any cash on DLC this year? I know I bought some Mass Effect 2 stuff, but I think that’s about it. Normally when I eye DLC I’m exclusively looking for story expansions – not maps or weapons.

if you paid $60 for a new game you should get the dlc for free, what they do is plan the dlc when making the game just to make a few extra $$$ instead of adding it into the game making it worth while.

It's total BS, They need to stop racing and showing off early demos. All they're doing is fucking up games to come. And now investors are expecting it.

Yeah its a total money grab, and with BF3 you can really see how degraded these games are with all the rushing.

I like their Day one patch thing. Yeah its nothing new, but them anticipating it and hiding behind the excuse makes me wanna go into gamestop and just have my preorder canceled and shift the cash to some new gear or another game.

What I'm meaning to say is, don't announce or show off early content, and take the full time needed to make a full game which will deliver. I hate playing a game with only 1/4 of the mp maps simply because of this:

"BY THE TIME THE DLC COMES OUT IM SICK OF THE ORIGINAL MAPS, IF THEYRE ALL TOGETHER AT LAUCNH ILL PLAY ALL THE MAPS LESS AND MORE EQUALLY AND IN A YEAR OR TWO THE GAME RUNS ITS NATURAL COURSE!" like does anyone get that, instead of playing the 5 maps at launch 100 times each, throw in 20 maps, ill play every one 25 times each, and hey, its not as boring. Instead of DLC every so often, let the full game be played for a year and make an expansion pack, fuck dlc, 90% of expansion packs are equal to or greater in content to the original. Not ship the same fucking game with nothing new every month.
EXPANSION = ENTIRELY NEW EXPERIENCE (rethought)
DLC = SAME SHIT DIF PILE (Finish MAP 009)
Sorry i'm just right with that last comparison. :P

You can't return open games you have tried so why would people expect a return policy on DLC. Dumb!

You can return used games before 1 week.

Also, for those who say and think, "just don't buy it", that's lame.

People want to buy the full game at retail instead of having to pay more for the DLC to complete the game.

Seriously, imo, they're just doing this because they can justify a retail price higher than $60.

There are very few companies left who make DLC to "add" "new" content.

Not to mention you can sell a used game but you can't sell DLC.....this is ignorant. Companies are forcing people to buy DLC to do things like play online or keep up with map packs (side note, I wonder if they're counting "free" DLC that uses included coupon codes). So of course DLC numbers are on the rise. I am mostly against DLC, I think it's leading the game industry in a bad direction. It is nice to think that developers can add value after the game is made but more often than not, value is removed prior to the game's release so it can be sold separately later.

If they don't include it when the game is released they can kiss my ass if they think I'm paying for something I already paid for. DLC is an excuse to rape the consumer for every penny they can get.

Sorry, the consumers are not "warming up". They're being forced. If you don't buy day 1 dlc then you won't be able to enjoy the fullest of the game you payed out the ass for in the first place. Thanks but no thanks. I'm not buying any games anymore. Those days are over for me. I am one of thsoe consumers that actually has put his foot down and refuses to participate. Unless it's real good DLC worth the value and not released soon after the main game. I call bullshit.

Might be my nostalgia goggles, but I remember when developers used to give an expansion pack which really was like a new game for ~half the price of the original. Sometimes even giving an expansion pack free for like "Thanks for playing our games after all these years." I guess greed took over. A business is a business.

Yeah, it's certainly starting to feel like we get half a game at launch. I think developers are trying to find the sweet spot.

lets take a lesson from Capcom and wait for the re-re-release, THEN spend money on the complete version. I'm still holding out for for SSF IV: Deluxe Turbo Arcade Edition with PS3 exclusive Rockman on disc but needs a voucher to "download." :P
