Ubisoft has released some early concept artwork from the original Assassin's Creed that shows the game that could have been. Apparently, AC began its life as a spin-off of the Prince of Persia franchise. 

"We were all under the illusion that we were making a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time spin-off," artist Khai Nguyen says. "The assassin was supposed to be the little prince's bodyguard."

Nguyen also states that they were considering co-op, which has still not made it's way to the franchise. "We debated whether or not co-op was going to make it into the game," he says. 

There's a whole bunch of images to look at, all of which date from November of 2004, three full years before Assassin's Creed was released. Hey look, the lost city of Petra.
