Numerous developers and publishers have long complained about the second hand video game market since they don't get a cut out of second hand game or pre-owned sales. To combat it, Electronic Arts has instituted their Online Pass initiative. Under it, those who either buy new EA releases second hand or rent them will have to shell out a few additional bucks if they want to enjoy any online features.

The Online Pass initiative has both been praised and criticized. Other companies, like Homefront publisher THQ, have started looking into similar systems for their releases. The criticism has mostly come from gamers who don't like the idea of being locked out of certain features of a game they already paid for, but apparently even some people in the video game industry think the whole Online Pass initiative isn't such a good idea.

According to Rick White, the producer of Saber Interactive's upcoming third-person shooter Inversion, what video game developers and publishers need to do is make sure that their releases are well worth the price.

"I think in North America at least you have that problem where, especially with the economy the way it is, people would just rather buy their games used - wait for two months and then buy it," he said. "I think the challenge is... for me personally putting locks in the game to force you not to buy pre-owned is dicey. I would rather do something like we're doing with Inversion where we're giving you multiplayer, we're giving you co-op, we're giving you a cool, compelling story and lots of cool elements in the game.

"You're going to want to own it. You're going to want to have it more than a weekend. The story is long enough, where as in some games the story is only say six to eight hours long, so why would I buy it, right?" he added. "So one thing we need to commit to as gamers and developers is to make you want to own our game because there's a lot of content, make you want to own it because you can play with your friends by playing co-op and playing multiplayer."

"But that content has to be compelling; if your multiplayer sucks, your co-op sucks and your story's only six hours long... why am I going to spend US$ 60? Make it US$ 60 worth. Make your game truly worth the US$ 60 and make it good. Put your love and passion into it and people are going to want to own your game. I mean, do people really rent Call of Duty?"

He asked "Do people really rent Call Of Duty?" well if you've got even 1/8th of a brain then yes you should. Just like with any game i would never be blindly suckered in by hype into pre-ordering a game and always try before i buy. Advertising's easy, reviews often get artificially inflated when money changes hands so you gotta realise you to blame if you feel you just wasted £100 on some special edition, and yeah i'm totally against anything developers try to devalue used games that i own just to fill their own pockets.

I don't like the online pass system because my son and I share games. We live in the same household and like to play each others games. Why should I have to pay for another online pass for my son when we live in the same house and I already paid for the game once!

Rick White sort of has a point but, he completely ignored the people who pirate games in his argument. The Online Pass at least helps the devs gain some of their money back.

I don't hate the Online Pass nor do I like it. It's way better than selling in-disc items as DLCs.

LOL, I'm with you for in-disc items sold as DLCs, haha. But really, online pass are good only if they decrease the price of the game as much as they sell the online pass. Ex: If the game is worth 59$, put an online pass at 9$ and the game at 49$, then everyone is happy BUT second hand buyers and sellers (and hackers, dah). But they can't sell a game 59$, and still make you pay another 9$ for online.

Online pass or no online pass, people will pirate the game anyway and find a way to deactivate the pass. The pass is not an antipiracy measure but a resale countermeasure.

If more devs. had the same way of thinking as this dev. I think there would be more quality games around.

He's got a very valid point. People are more likely to buy a game that has tons of awesome features in it or in the case of (let's hope) Skyrim, has one kick-ass storyline. And to EA I borrowed Dead Space 2 from my friend. Because you put that kinda bs in there I am not gonna buy a copy out of sheer spite.

wtf while i agree charging in disc dlc is bs but what about the half assed dlc, oh wow couple of maps, new weapons or new abilities... they are worse than the freely available mods for half life, morrowind and oblivion... even the original unreal tournament has so much freely available maps and characters, that put so many of the paid dlc to shame... the best dlc is for enslaved (i am dying for sequel to enslaved), you play a new character, have more plot and cutscenes and the gameplay is changed

so fyi devs do not only need to put more value in their games but to the dlc

I only hated the online pass with Dead Space 2.... I got it off Play-Asia with Asian region and my account is New Zealander.... And I couldn't enter the online pass nor buy it =/

hey symbal u do know if u preorder u can get your money back if u try it then don't like it right ... i mean that way if u love it and every one else does to ur not up till 3 am looking for a non used copy ...and enough with this company's whining about missing out oh this oh that just let every one sell there serial keys through that company to another user in the purchase price of buying a used game

Ideally you would return if you don't like the game but it's human nature to convince yourself you didn't make a mistake and not return the game and most people just don't feel comfortable doing it, that's why only a tiny percentage will return an unliked game, so i'll always stand by try before you buy.

I sell my old games to buy NEW ones. How does this hurt the indrustry? Next thing you know Chevy will implement a a/c pass for there used vehicles.

The Online Pass system is completely stupid. It is just EA's way of making the consumer pay more money for a game they already purchased at full retail price. It is sad how greedy companies have to be, and hopefully there will be no "call of duty renting" and the Online Pass crap will die.
