Dealing with Skyrim’s PS3 Problems

Skyrim launched with its fair share of bugs and glitches, but none has been as devastating as the PlayStation 3’s save file problem. In short, the size of Skyrim’s save file and the way that file interacts with the PS3’s architecture create a situation in which the system struggles to keep up with your ever-expanding save, eventually dragging gameplay into a slow, laggy mess.

Bethesda attempted to fix the issue earlier this month, but many users are still experiencing the same issue. And while there’s no official fix to the problem (one could still be weeks away), there are a few things that have been reported to help alleviate the symptoms.

If you’re having trouble with Skyrim on your PS3, here are a few things you can try to make it run more smoothly:

Clear Space on Your Hard Drive: This is only effective if you wipe several gigabytes of installed games and is not guaranteed to positively impact Skyrim’s gameplay. Only test it if you’re not worried about re-installing games.

Turn off Auto-Save:  Turning off the auto-save function helps keep your overall save file size down, but probably won’t change issues you’re already experiencing. Still, it’s worth a shot.

Control Your File Size: Skyrim keeps track of everything you do, from leaving doors open to moving fruit around your house. Do what you can to leave the environment as undisturbed as possible and you’ll keep your save file down to a more manageable size.

Restart the PS3: No guarantees here either, but some players report that a quick restart can help limit frame rate issues for long play sessions. Always worth a shot, right?

What’s really amazing about this problem is that it somehow made it into the final version of the game. It’s astounding to think that no tester at Bethesda put enough time into the PlayStation 3 version to hit a bug that’s apparently affecting a very large sampling of the user base. Then again, you can’t always catch everything, right?

Let us know if you have troubles with your Skyrim install, and if any of these solutions help. In the meantime, how should Bethesda make this up to customers?

The only fix that sounds reasonable to me (as a developer) is to wait 30 in game days so that an algoritmh that "cleans house", taht is, resets objects stats, is run, and the file is sizable again.

I'd recommend Oblivion and Fallout, but alas they never fixed those either...

Maybe play on the PS2?

It's sad when some of the best games have game-breaking flaws.

Considering Bethesda's track record of not fixing bugs with there other game releases for the ps3, it's no surprise were still waiting on them to fix this! As Oblivion game of the year had game breaking bugs in it making this release of the game unplayable if you chose to play through the wrong quests. Even Fallout 3 had at least one bug that ruined this game for me. The radio bug was the most annoying as this game is very boring with the in game radio turned off, to avoid the game from freezing up.

Worse I wanted to buy Skyrim for my Birthday coming up in February. Sadly it is pointless due to their in ability to fix some of the more serious bugs in the game to date.

Greed.

Get it out on the release date so we can take advantage of holiday dollars. Ready or not!

Cut corners wherever you can, it's too common now to release a game with the attitude of, "oh well we can just patch it once it's out to fix things" Back in the day before online games had to be standalone and if they were full of bugs, they failed and didn't sell. We need to get back there.

Just turn off the notifications and all the extra settings in the Display Settings(Cross Color Reduction Filter, RGB Full Range, Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr Super-White, Deep Color/Colour Output) and all the settings in the Game Settings. I never experienced any continuous lag in skyrim after disabling all this settings.. Oh and my save file size is 8+ mb, been playing for close to 30 hrs I think.. Hope this helps.

there is only 1 solution...

dont buy a broken game...

or trade in your skyrim to buy a game that does work. that way u wont spend more money on DLC for a broken ass game.

What games aren't broken these days though?

Also another solution is buy this on PC and have the modders fix everything as usual...

I have noticed the laggy gameplay on my PS3 as well. But it wasnt anything bad enough for me to turn the game off. I haven't noticed it since they patched it a few weeks ago. Maybe im just lucky.

I'm holding off on buying this game, just because of this lag issue; if I ever read about a satisfying patch, I might still get it.

Until then, I will continue playing a lag-free RPG like "Dark Souls"!

Oh, wait...

Perhaps dedicating resources to the PS3 team to actually find and clean out the bug itself instead of anyone working on ANY DLC at the moment.

After the bug has been squashed, they can then release perhaps the first DLC pack for free as an apology.

Though the game is great they really are doing themselves some reputational damage the longer they allow these things to go on, and when they consistently release games before they are ready just to meet a marketing deadline.

For me unfortunately there is no way anymore, i have around 120 hours of game and is stucking each 5 mins, it already corrupted data on my PS3, and for me thats it, i will go to store today to change it to another game.

I really loved the game but this annoying bugs really destroy the experience, i dont want my PS3 with problems because of this, and i dont think this is right, how can they release a game with major issues like this? Back in the time(i would say around 2000-2005/6 and also before 2000) any company that dared to release a game with bugs would see their sells fail, and would think twice before releasing the next game (in the meaning they would be sure there are no major issues)

Dont get me wrong, having bugs is normal i know, but not MAJOR bugs like this.

Im really hating this "new way to think" of the industry, "lets just release the game to sell, then we can go patching".

This is another game that makes me concerned with the path that game industry is going thru.

# Skyrim won't loadKu 2013-01-28 10:11
I've been gaming Skyrim for months, and there has only been small, unimportant bugs until this morning. I started the game like usual, and waited for it to load. But then it was stuck there forever! I've restarted the system a million times, but it's the same every time. I really don't want to go fiddling with the filed either, because I'm afraid I'll do something wrong. I really don't know what to do if I can't fix this. I love Skyrim :c
