David Jaffe Talks About Skyrim’s Mechanics

Skyrim is nothing if not a massive success, and many would point to the game’s compelling story, open world and beautiful graphics as the source of that good fortune. The creator of Twisted Metal, David Jaffe, has a different opinion: it’s all about the mechanics.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Jaffe noted that it wasn’t so much the story or look of Skyrim that ensnared players, but the complexities of managing all of the game’s resources. Here’s a quote, profanity included:

“Walking through the forest, going 'I need to get this shit back to the armorer, so I can sell it, so I can make money, so I can go on this side quest I've been trying to earn enough shit to go on successfully, but I can't go much faster because if I pick up another item, I'm going to be going really slow, and I'm going to get my ass killed going through this forest, getting back to town. How do I deal with that?”

Jaffe calls these game elements the “language of interactivity,” and believes that working through these resources and how to deal with them is what keeps players coming back for more. Why the negativity people? Jaffe was only saying that the resource systems in Skyrim work together like a giant puzzle that keep people coming back for more. At least, that's what I took from this article and it's excerpt.

Also it's nice to read an article from Mr. F that isn't oozing with malice and contempt.

comes out with "shit". Honestly, That Original developer......who has copied other peoples games all his carrer, thinks he has the right to say what is good or bad. I dont even like skyrim, its not for me, but even i know its got something going for itself.

When he makes a game that isnt a copy of about 10 other peoples games, and crappy unoriginal racer, then he MAY have the right to even bother talking about this stuff.

Jaffe needs to get off his purch and realise he is not as good as he thinks he is.

Maybe you need to recognize. God of War was fantastic. He may not have original ideas, but who is to say that you can't take a concept and improve it?

Also, he is talking about game development theory. You could say bethesda puts half the game development in the hands of the modders in that case.
