David Cage: There's more to games than just killing people |
Listed in: News, Games Tags: David Cage, Quantic Dream
First, it was the auteurs, and then the space marines. Now, David Cage is speaking out yet again, and this time, it's about "killing stuff" in video games. Yep, you guessed it. He's not very fond of it, as it turns out.
"Look at Call of Duty," he said, in an interview with CVG. "How many copies does it sell every year? I'm fine with that. It's cool. I'm just saying I'm not that happy with an industry that is entirely limited to experiences where all you are doing is shooting. That's my problem. There is much more we can do with interactivity than just killing people."

Of course, with his company Quantic Dream, they're trying their best not to get sucked and stuck into this pigeonhole. "Would you go and see a movie which just shows shooting for 90 minutes?"
"That appeals very much to my son, who is ten years old. He wants to explore the world, but also fears it. Being in a videogame where he can jump very far, have cool guns and shoot at people without getting hurt is something he feels very good about. It gives him exaggerated confidence, control."
"But as an adult, it doesn't work. When you think of non-gamers, very few people have an interest in that."
From all the statements he's been making thus far, he could probably give Snooki a run for her money in University guestings. Just saying.

I dont get that part. Not into manipulating? Hard selling? Hmmm... Seems he just is having personal issues raising his son and the best he can do is rant about it to everyone but him lol

Clearly both Nintendo and Apple have proven that to be false. As well as proven all those knuckleheads spouting such garbage as fools.

Anyways, Cage makes a good point. A lot of people go to shooters first when they think about video games. I just think it's kind of lame that 'hardcore' gamers look down on 'other' gamers who don't think shooters are the be-all/end-all of video game genres. I like to pop off a few headshots every now and then but if I had to choose what style of video game defined what a video game should be, I wouldn't want it to be something as limited and repetitive as shooters.
Cage's comment about non-gamers is kind of strange though. It makes it sound like all the gamers out there in the world walk around daydreaming about sniping nazi zombies and flying through the air with miniguns all the time, whereas a non-gamer thinks about complex murder-mystery dramas and interesting gameplay... lulz
I like the idea of 'growing up' video games and actually looking at mature subjects in video games (i.e. violence/murder/pain/loss/etc.) in a more mature light that doesn't necessarily glorify the subject matter. I for one hope to see more games like Heavy Rain in the near future (with innovations and improvements, of course).
