David Cage: There's more to games than just killing people

First, it was the auteurs, and then the space marines. Now, David Cage is speaking out yet again, and this time, it's about "killing stuff" in video games. Yep, you guessed it. He's not very fond of it, as it turns out.

"Look at Call of Duty," he said, in an interview with CVG. "How many copies does it sell every year? I'm fine with that. It's cool. I'm just saying I'm not that happy with an industry that is entirely limited to experiences where all you are doing is shooting. That's my problem. There is much more we can do with interactivity than just killing people."

Of course, with his company Quantic Dream, they're trying their best not to get sucked and stuck into this pigeonhole. "Would you go and see a movie which just shows shooting for 90 minutes?"

"That appeals very much to my son, who is ten years old. He wants to explore the world, but also fears it. Being in a videogame where he can jump very far, have cool guns and shoot at people without getting hurt is something he feels very good about. It gives him exaggerated confidence, control."

"But as an adult, it doesn't work. When you think of non-gamers, very few people have an interest in that."

From all the statements he's been making thus far, he could probably give Snooki a run for her money in University guestings. Just saying.

i am now seriously wondering what's gotten into david cage that he keeps saying all these things. not that he doesn't make sense -- he does raise very good points. but, i don't know. he just seems to be a tad more talkative nowadays, don't you think? perhaps they just want to make sure that quantic dream isn't lost in people's consciousness, especially now that their new games haven't been announced yet?

"it gives him exaggerated confidence, control."

"But as an adult, it doesn't work. When you think of non-gamers, very few people have an interest in that."

I dont get that part. Not into manipulating? Hard selling? Hmmm... Seems he just is having personal issues raising his son and the best he can do is rant about it to everyone but him lol

There's a sense of stupidity going around the interwebs that states a game is only a game if it's hard core and it's only hard core if it's a shoot'em'up genre.

Clearly both Nintendo and Apple have proven that to be false. As well as proven all those knuckleheads spouting such garbage as fools.

I for one fully support his ramblings. I've been say it for years, finally a developer is speaking out. I want more games like heavy rain. Im not 12 years old anymore, Im 26 and I want true mature titles. Lets finally move pass "videogames" and become "Interactive Entertainment." Only then would we finally be taken seriously as an art form.

You don't wanna play CoD, Crysis, Killzone- fine, there are plenty o'games out there that don't just involve killing. He fails to recognise that many games esp. Crysis, God of War, Prince of Persia, Gears of War, etc. all have extremely good storylines and puzzles and are not mindless killing. The whole point of games is to do whatever you like and escape the bounds of normal life. Comparing VGs to films is stupid, thats like saying I dont want to watch a film that is made just of text like a book- well duh because they are different media. He just needs to let people be happy- supersoldiers, cool guns and brutal stuff sells, and so does racing, cooking, sports, puzzle and RPG.

I agree with him, these days mindless killing IS what defines gaming. Back in the older days of gaming it was virtual sports that defined gaming with games like Pong. Most gamers of this generation though won't touch a game unless it involves some sort of killing. It seems as if gaming is changing or just being destroyed...

I hope their next game bomb, it would be a good way to deflate this guy's ego.

I hope YOU bomb.

Anyways, Cage makes a good point. A lot of people go to shooters first when they think about video games. I just think it's kind of lame that 'hardcore' gamers look down on 'other' gamers who don't think shooters are the be-all/end-all of video game genres. I like to pop off a few headshots every now and then but if I had to choose what style of video game defined what a video game should be, I wouldn't want it to be something as limited and repetitive as shooters.

Cage's comment about non-gamers is kind of strange though. It makes it sound like all the gamers out there in the world walk around daydreaming about sniping nazi zombies and flying through the air with miniguns all the time, whereas a non-gamer thinks about complex murder-mystery dramas and interesting gameplay... lulz

I like the idea of 'growing up' video games and actually looking at mature subjects in video games (i.e. violence/murder/pain/loss/etc.) in a more mature light that doesn't necessarily glorify the subject matter. I for one hope to see more games like Heavy Rain in the near future (with innovations and improvements, of course).

I have always agreed with David Cage, everything he says is true. This industry has become stale and video games have so much potential...

Personally I feel that we need to take a step back with Video Gaming. Focus less on the cutting edge graphics and repetitive gameplay and go back to making games that are fun and interesting with stories that don't suck balls.
