Cyberpunk 2077 has its roots in the pen-and-paper tabletop gaming industry. The guys at CD Projekt RED even managed to dig up the old guy who created the thing for input. His name is Mike Pondsmith and back in the '80s he essentially took Blade Runner off the screen and put it into a book so teenage boys could live it with the game Cyberpunk 2020.
Nowadays it's pretty safe to say that in 7 years we're not going to have flying cars and all sorts of cool dystopian tropes, so the game's been pushed forward 57 years and Pondsmith says the whole thing is "bigger, badder, stranger." Needless to say, Pondsmith's been waiting a long time for someone to do his game right in video game form and now, he says, CD Projekt RED has nailed it.
