Should Companies Be Paying for the Inevitable?
Back in April 2011, there's no denying that Sony was in some pretty hot water with the much-remembered PlayStation Network hack. During this time, a hacktivist group called Anonymous broke into the gaming services servers and reportedly stole the personal information of thousands of users. Whether you view this is payback for geohot or an attempt to keep us protected in the end, our data was pushed into unlawful hands, and the UK's Information Commissioner's Office wants the tech giant to surrender $332,500 for their error.

Obviously, Sony has the money to spend here, but is that really the question to consider? Sure it stinks that a lot of our info ended up in the wrong hands like our usernames and passwords, but from what I have read that is all that was actually available due to an extra layer of encryption on credit card data. I think it's certainly a mistake that Sony has made, but since when is any tech coding ever totally secure. If enough people worked to do it, anything can be hacked, so in a lot of ways I don't see why the company would have to pay so big for something that is unpredictable and can happen to anyone. Some might say they could have tried harder, but honestly how do we know for sure they weren't doing that already? You shouldn't be filing a case on anything but certainty, so unless clear lack of judgement can be proven, I feel having the company pay for something inevitable is an unfair move.
