Completing Dark Souls isn't the point, says director |

Dark Souls is being made to be a punishing game. Dark Souls director, producer, and game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki has said time and again that he wants Demon's Souls' successor to be one hell of hard game, but there is of course a way to finish it. According to him, however, completing the game isn't the focus.
"There will be several ways to end the game similar to how it was in Demon’s Souls," he said in an interview with Edge Magazine. "But the endgame is not really the focus at all. In a sense I dare not require a player to complete the game. There is a completion point but it’s a game where the user can choose not to complete it, just live in this world for eternity."
Miyazaki also touched on one of the game's challenges: keeping your character safe not only physically but mentally healthy as well. As the game progresses, your character will have to face assaults on his psyche along with the physical dangers posed by enemy creatures.
"If the mind becomes to far gone then the character will become a zombie or monster," he said. "That is what you are fighting against in the game; this curse of not being able to face death."
Miyazaki also seems to have dropped a hint on what this "monster" state will be as he also mentions that players can journey through the game as a "soldier or vampire".
Dark Souls is slated for release later this year. No specifics on the launch date yet, but the game has been confirmed for both PS3 and Xbox 360.
