EVE Online developer CCP is currently hard at work on Dust 514, a semi-free-to-play game for the PS3 that ties into their popular sci-fi massively multiplayer online game. Dust 514 is still firmly lodged in the realm of the current console generation but the studio is already looking forward to the future of gaming.
Thor Gunnarsson, the studio's vice-president of business development, told Develop that CCP newcastle, their UK-based subsidiary, is currently working on technology for the next generation of gaming consoles as well as PC.
"Yes, we're currently building tech for the next generation of consoles, as well as future PC tech too," he added. "Ultimately, CCP Newcastle will be working in full capacity on technology for the next generation of hardware.”
He further explained that CCP Newcastle, which opened last year, is primarily being used as an engineering office but is also optimizing Dust 514 at the same time.
Nintendo has already started to show its hand with the Wii U's announcement, but neither Sony nor Microsoft have said anything official about their next home gaming consoles. Quite a few developers, however, have already started to begin development of new engines in anticipation of the next console generation. It pays to be prepared, after all.
