Bejeweled 3 heads to PS3, Xbox 360 and DS

The latest iteration of the gem-swapping puzzler is heading to "all major gaming platforms" near you later this year.

PopCap Games has today announced plans to bring five new adaptations of its Bejeweled 3 franchise to the PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS.

“Critics agree that Bejeweled 3 raised the standard for match-3 games to new heights,” said Ed Allard, studio head at PopCap Games. “This holiday, we're bringing that experience to PlayStation 3, PSN, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, and Nintendo DS gamers with adaptations that look great and play even better on each platform."

Released last year as a digital download, Bejeweled 3 features twice the game modes of its predecessor as well as eight mini-games and a complete revision of sound and graphics. According to its latest figures, the Bejeweled franchise has now become one of the top 10 video game franchises in history, with more than "half a billion people worldwide have played the game, and over 50 million units have been sold across 17 platforms from iPhone to Xbox and even airline seatbacks. An estimated 8 billion hours have been spent playing Bejeweled, and the game continues to sell at the rate of one copy every 4.3 seconds."
