Patrick Bach, you remember that guy, believes in reviews and Metacritic, in particular, to give a better indication of how their game is going rather than sales...which when you're part of the world's biggest game manufacturer that seems odd, no?
Patrick was talking to Eurogamer explaining the situation when it comes to quality vs. quantity. "You can argue that game quality has to do with sales, but it's not equal. You have to have enough game to reach sales. But it doesn't mean if you have a 95 rated game that would sell the most copies. An 85 rated game could sell way more copies than a 95 rated game, which is sad for the developer, because the developer then gets a receipt on that: you made a great game, and then the sales tell you that you didn't make a great game."
Sure money is important, but even the best games have sold very few copies. Underrated classics like No More Heroes and XIII, were released with critical acclaim but were not exactly hot sellers on opening day, but even then, the international press and the reviews helped NMH get a sequel and XIII is getting a remake some time next year.
Bach also talks about the importance of feedback and what it means to making a great game. "The other thing you have is consumer feedback, as in forum posts. You can't use that because it's mostly people being very upset with stuff. It's not very often you have a thread on how awesome something is. Well you get that sometimes with videos and stuff, but general threads are mostly complaints."
Bach also said in the interview that Battlefield 3, like a lot of games he's worked on, have had Metascore goals - actual numerical values that they attain for when it came to game releases. It's good to see game developers focusing on quality.
