Australia is known culturally for inventing a few things tech wise. We made the sampler, the thing that basically every DJ and musician uses now to have even less original work, but when it comes to games we helped make a few titles...but mainly ports. Those lesser known and liked titles that people play on other consoles or handhelds but are still somewhat profitable. The ports however have dried up and everyone has moved on as this week was announced that Brisbane Studio KMM Studios has simply gone and will be shutting it's doors.

We've had a hell of a year in Australia. Team Bondi being the biggest story of the year and last night I heard a report that the Australian Games Industry could be worth 2 billion by 2013. I scoffed at the figure and then remember we still have a lot of people developing for the iPhone and iPad, but what about console games?

Jason Stark, head of Krome Studios and KMM, which was made up of a good portion of ex-Krome employees said the writing was on the wall for some time but that it was still surprising nonetheless. "We've all expected the industry to be shrinking - it's been bad times. It's gone from being a mild contraction to being pretty much obliterated". Stark also blamed a lack of having any new projects, the way the Australian dollar was going against the UK, Euro and US dollar and the lack of tax incentives in Australia.

Since 2009, we've seen the closing of EA's Visceral, Pandemic Studios, responsible for the amazing Destroy All Human series. Unlike most other media properties once these titles are sold and given out into the world, there is rarely a way of them being profitable post their inital release and the global financial crisis wasn't a helping factor.

It really puts things in perspective when it comes to an entire country not being able to have a strong balance in the games industry...especially when you want to write for and about games...I'm gonna go for a walk now...need some time to think.

Some of us are lucky, ive been saving since last year and manage to bank huge amounts of money for an Indie Development project. And my budget for that game is 2x more then my budget. So now i'm figuring out a percentage which now i can stay on budget.

But others aren't lucky.
