The NPD Group has released its monthly video game sales results for the North American market, with Eidos and Square Enix's long-awaited Deus Ex: Human Revolution besting other titles to take the top spot of the chart.

Taking the second spot in NPD's August chart is EA's NCAA Football, with the multi-selling Call of Duty: Black Ops, Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension and Cars 2, rounding off the top five respectively.

Overall, August retail sales was not that good as it dropped 23 percent compared to the same month last year. But despite the disappointing result, NPD's Anita Frazier is still confident it could climbed back, with a strong lineup of titles up ahead.

“Even though year to date performance of the new physical portion of the industry is down 5%, more than half of industry sales in this channel are still to be realized in the back four months of the year," said Frazier. "Given the strong release schedule in the coming months, new physical retail sales could still be flat to slightly up once full year sales are tallied.”

She added, “Games fans have a huge variety to choose from in September, especially for fans of games in the sports genre. Those interested in more 'core' gaming experiences have both Resistance 3 and Gears of War 3, among others, to look forward to.  Yes, some of these are already out in the market but we’ll get our first picture of their combined sales performance in the new physical retail channel when we release those figures on October 13.”

The software top ten for August is as follows:
  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)
  2. NCAA Football 12 (360, PS3)
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)
  4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (NDS, Wii, PS3)
  5. Cars 2 (NDS, Wii, 360, PS3, PC)
  6. Just Dance: Summer Party (Wii)
  7. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
  8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)
  9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)
  10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, 360, PS3)

I guess all the minor set back and controversies Deus Ex have endured over the past months have finally been rewarded as it truly deserves the number one spot for the month.

Boring. This list is full of shit. Where'd all the good games go? Its full of nothing but mainstream crap for mainstream gamers.

The only good shit on this list is Legend Of Zelda OT?? Come on guys. Where's the originally in gaming. Shooters, sports, and poorly adapted cartoon/movie based games? That's it?
