Assassin’s Creed Dev Thinks Games Journalists are Racists |

Assassin’s Creed III dev Alex Hutchinson has sparked quite a frenzy on the Internet this morning. Apparently, Hutchinson believes that the western gaming press treats Japanese games differently that it treats Western games, and that this is some form of “subtle racism.”

Here’s the whole quote, just for clarity:
“I think there’s a subtle racism in the business, especially on the journalists' side, where Japanese developers are forgiven for doing what they do. I think it’s condescending to do this. Just think about how many Japanese games are released where their stories are literally gibberish. Literally gibberish. There’s no way you could write it with a straight face, and the journalists say ‘oh it is brilliant.”
He continued:
“Then Gears of War comes out and apparently it’s the worst written narrative in a game ever. I’ll take Gears of War over Bayonetta any time. It’s patronising to say, 'oh those Japanese stories, they don’t really mean what they’re doing.”
It’s worth noting that Hutchinson is right about one thing: Many Japanese games are complete gibberish. However, I’m having a hard time remembering a specific instance of critics adoring a game with a gibberish plot without mentioning said gibberish plot. In fact, I bet every review ever written of any game in the Final Fantasy series has the word “gibberish” in it somewhere.
Either way, everyone’s throwing a hissy fit.
Would you say game journos treat Japanese games differently?

Because he's the one who criticized Gears of War for poor writing and even criticized Dead Space...
So, if he's not a journalist, I wonder who this guy is talking about...

for instance when i say hyperdimension neptuna to average gamers they either react 'what the hell is that' or 'oh god no' or of to some similar effect.
similar reactions are brought up if i mention any of the atelier games, agarest war, shin megami tensei etc.
these may be obscure games to some people but they fall under the category of japanese games.
in the end i think its harder in general for japanese games to make a good name for themselves in the western audience but once they do the ratings follow suit, as they do with any other game just a part of marketing i guess.
now go out there a play persona 3 portable you'll be glad you did :)

Likewise, in general it depends very much what game you're talking about and who it's targeting.

We're taking bits and pieces of each country's media and using it to attack it. For instance, Lollipop chainsaw OMGWTF AM I PLAYING, but i said the exact same thing when i played twisted metal for the first time.
Dismissing crazyness in japanese games isnt RAAACISM its will acknowledgement that we dont understand their culture, we dont understand what they find entertaining and why.
If anything I wanna fight to keep the crazyness. Example: Devil May Cry.. Im not saying anything bad about the new one, but its americanized.. its lost its japanese bloodline.
In short, KEEP JAPAN CRAZY.
