Anonymous going after Sony execs |
Listed in: News Tags: anonymous, Geohot, Playstation, Sony

"Hacktivist" members of internet collective Anonymous have reportedly stepped up their attacks on Sony. Not content with hacking attempts made on the PlayStation Network as well as other official PlayStation-related sites, a group calling themselves Sony Recon is now digging up dirt on Sony executives.
The group has apparently already uncovered personal details on some Sony employees, one of which is Robert S. Wiesenthal, a Group Executive at Sony Corporation leading Corporate Development and Mergers and Acquisitions at Sony headquarters. Info on Wiesenthal including his family history, marital status, address, and even whether he has kids or not have already been found.
Sony Recon's main targets include Nicole Seligman and Sony CEO, president, and chairman Sir Howard Stringer. One Anon reportedly compained on IRC, "No one found ANY info on Stringers kids?" The group isn't just going after Sony employees, however. The judge and Sony lawyers involved in the case against PS3 hackers are also "valid targets". The website of the law firm handling Sony's case, Kilpatrick Townsend, was reportedly brought down ealier but has since become accessible again.
Anonymous launched the campaign against Sony in retaliation for the company's handling of the court case against George "Geohot" Hotz and other hackers who successfully broke through the PS3's security. Anonymous sent out a statement damning Sony for having "abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work."

The hacks came after the removal of OtherOS, not vice versa. No one was seriously interested in hacking the PS3 until Sony removed the ability to run their own code under Linux.
Reply
No, first GeoHot told sony that there was a loophole in their system, they didn't listen. He made an exploit they went berzerke and removed Other OS. The hacks were coming before Sony removed Other OS. Then GeoHotz goal was to try and bring Other OS back. The hacks that are out now for the PS3 have nothing to do with Other OS being removed, that was Geo's goal.

Here is the true reason for removal:

it was simply sony who thought of it as a security break.
so go and blame sony!!!

Let's just hope that some moron doesn't take things to far, and bring their hatred of Sony into the real world.
I know that looking into a person's history is completely legal, but to get information on a person's family (which will inevitably be used for some form of threatening) is completely tactless and reprehensible. Hopefully some of the smarter cyber-terrorists will smack the dumb ass that wants info on the kid upside the head.

It very well could have been a reporter in the channel trying to stir up shit in order to write a story about how "Teh Evel Haxxors R @ttkin' p00r Sony's Kidz!"

If Sony figure out who they are, then Sony are free to share that information with the authorities for causing damage to their servers. The issue here is that WE aren't free to share what we learn about Sony's console. Did that make sense? Of course not. You're connecting two entirely unrelated things.
Finally, yes the servers going down for a day was a minor annoyance for the users, but Sony were hit the hardest. Keep that in mind. I'm not saying they were justified, because I certainly don't think this was the right thing to do, but this affected Sony more than anybody else.
Reply
And as far as not forcing people to share information they don't want to share, Sony obviously didn't want their information in the public. Why should they be forced to share information but not hacker groups like Anonymous. I fail to see any logic in your statements.

I never said the attacks were justified, but on a separate note I was just saying that hiding your identity doesn't make you a hypocrite which is what the person I was replying to was implying. Bradley Manning, for instance, was not a hypocrite for not going public with his identity with the leak. Likewise, whatever you think about the information Anonymous have been digging up, maintaining anonymity doesn't make them hypocrites. Dicks, I'd agree, but it just doesn't fulfill the technical requirements for hypocrisy.
I fail to see any comprehension skills in your statement.

- SNAKE let go that rusty Metal Gear and go see who are this Anonymous.
- Misson accepted.
Serioustly, I was pretty sure that the community would go after sony, and Anonymous is right on one thing, we don't own the PS3 right now, we only rent it... and that's a problem...

Dont over exagerate
you own the hardware and no-one would come after you for modifying the software for yourself. the only real limitation is you cant modify it then show the world, allowing the 'world' to thieve games. how is that wrong.
Sony are just trying to protect themseleves. Geohotz is just an attention seeking prick. f**k knows why anyone is on his side other than thieves.
not only has he made pirating possible hes also made dirty cheating possible
all any of what that little cunt has done has only really affected legit ps3 users. its not Sony its that little muggy bastard.

The people who decide to make Backup Loaders, and the people who rip games and upload them to the net are the thieves and pirates.

That's a very slippery slope argument. What next; ban knives worldwide because somebody might stab somebody else?

Anonymous claims to fight for web freedom, net neutrality and all that, but all they do is hurt their case. It's far more likely that their idiotic antics will be used to make the case against net neutrality rather than for it. All they have to do is a few more of these high profile stunts and lawmakers will start to think that maybe forcing all net users to register with an online ID tied to their real identities might be a good idea.

if i showed you how to rob from a store easily, is it my responsibily to make sure you dont, some will argue yes some will argue no point is it is the theif who is stealing not the person who figured out the way to do it
also all the people claiming sony are loosing all their money to piracy is complete BS sony is a MASSIVE international company with hundred's if not thousands of sources of revenue, have you not noticed the TV's DVD players mobile phones memory cards etc all made and sold by sony, the actual pirates would be making practically no impact on their revenue, as anyone who pirates games do so generally because they dont have enough money to buy said games, so as far as losses even they cant be claimed to be a loss of sale, because anyone with enough money to buy the game obviously would buy the game rather than risk breaking the law for a measily £30
point is sony should stop targeting the clever people who figure stuff out and the poor people who cant even afford their games and focus on companies/people who sell their games to make a profit, lets face is MS has a huge online mebership rate because pirates can play alongside legitimate copy players which makes XBL a pretty good place to play as there is plenty of matches/people to play against, realistically it makes XBL a much more worthwhile place to play online than PSN

piracy affects not only sony, it also affects game developer and much more than sony
just because sony is a big company doesnt mean anyone can use their licenced software and firmware for piracy, they are fighting hacker according to law, anon is not fighting the same way, they are criminals
your statement about xbox live is false, MS will ban your system if they detect you are using a pirated game
you can dodge the ban hammer, but not forever

this is the most ridiculus case of no sense-revenge, that i have seen
those who support hacking consoles should get a job and buy original games or go and rot in hell!

Sony is not corrupt, they are just not doing what you want them to do... Spoiled brats, that is all they are.

one thing you gotta remeber is everyone has got to respect the fact hackers are alot more intelligent than them especially the people who come in moaning about go learn how to code get a job for sony and fix the security weakness left in the ps3, oh wait no you would rather just try to be clever without doing anything at all

This whole situation is sort of bothersome, but I'd prefer if this whole "hacker scene" had some sensibility in them. GeoHot for example doesn't seem to even have proper manners, you don't buy a painting, make/copy several more and then distribute it for free without giving the proper royalty to the original creator. :-/

Anyways, the real issue is the censoring of free speech. This is free speech over the internet. What did george hotz do really? He posted some numbers and letters on the internet. It's not his responsibility what people do with that information. It's like holding a gun store responsible for someone who bought a gun from them, and then murdered someone. That's insane.
There has to be a line drawn I think. Although, for a major corporation to sue an individual for sharing information over the internet? What next for the future if they win? The judicial system isn't as solid as we would like to think.

scare tactic
this whole event is blown way WAY out of proportion
I Can see why there doing this but it's not a good enough reason
and why compare this to v for vendetta?
there isn't really an valid reason to do this
it's angry hackers not having things go there way. So they act like any 12 yr old would which is irrational stupid moronic and childish
actions have consequences
though i don't like sony to much and
would love to see them suffer
the way these hackers are retaliating
is ridiculous
grow up suck it up
you lost
ps3 got hacked so what? it has it's benefits and as you can see its downside
It's only a matter of time before this group gets caught
FYI
hackers will never win in the end
they always lose

i am not part of the flock that calls themselves that but i've seen it at work and agree with their motives
their methods may not always be....the best
but a few eggs must be cracked(and game systems as well) for the greater good

anyway...whatever you do, please don't use trojans, viruses , etc that infect other innocent people's PCs to do your bidding. Use your fucking own PCs to do your DDoS or whatever attack you can come up. If you ever use/invent viruses, trojans for your personal agendas, I will HATE you. That is a disgrace to 'Hacker' title.

Anonymous is taking things way too far. They are behaving much the same as terrorist groups taking things out of context, sense and meaning.
If they didn't like the fact that Sony took out Other OS and sued Hotz for giving away their copyrighted codes, they should have learned to read the terms and conditions before buying a PS3. Dumb nuts.
Its just like saying I rent you my house and here you go about abusing it by renovating it without my permission and duplicating the keys to give to your whole extended family, your class and everybody in the neighbourhood.

Um... No. Just no. Freedom is all-or-nothing. There is no such thing as "limited freedom."

I mean long term future. I think this point is being ignored by the pro sony-ers on here. Yeah, PS3 games are being pirated - it wont stop game devs making games - but it might help Sony aim down another path (spend time making products instead of trying to cripple dev communities and dumb down the consumer.)
I have to say - majority of pro sony peeps on here do appear to be rather short sighted. Don't think about this gen, think about next few gens.....people are always going to want this sort of entertainment and the market will provide it - the question is do we want it spoon fed to us on dumb boxes that have security which is worth more than the freedom of a human individual?
Personally - I think these companies can go f*k them selves with their international global overlord bull shit.
Who they think they are Catholic Church?
