Possibly the most hyped game of all time will have a trailer in less than an hour and I'm so excited. Someone reported that the announcement of GTAV occured on the third year anniversary of gamer-hater Jack Thompson being disbarred, but who cares about that guy when you could be playing a new GTA in a year's time?

So many secrets, so little time for the people at Rockstar. With simultaneously hyping up Max Payne 3, there are so many rumours flying around about GTAV right now, with everything from it being set in a global financial crisis'd Los Angeles, to it being set in London and everywhere in between, but one thing is on the table and that's a PSN, XBLA and Steam appropriated Grand Theft Auto, according to video game analysts at NewZoo.

But that doesn't mean the boxed version of the games will disappear as Peter Warman, CEO of Newzoo explains, "there are a lot of reasons why publishes are pushing towards digital distribution of triple-A titles", this includes everything from the cheaper costs of server storage as opposed to physical copies to possibilities of piracy protection.

"The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create [continuous revenue streams] on a title and simply make more money...Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will. That is why the boxed GTAV version will contain a collectible piece of merchanidse and a download code. No Disc", which I honestly think is not far from the truth.

Think about everything Rockstar have done recently. Strict online promotional campaigns, the Steam sale, the upcoming GTA3 releases and Rockstar's continued DLC first, boxed re-release later games (i.e. GOTY editions + Ultimate editions), it's all leading up to something or just simply more revenue streams. Time will tell....

I predict it's too big to be downloaded conveniently. At least for the PS3 version.

most people (at least in Europe, i can't tell for the US) do not own a internet conection that will allow them to download 10 to 20 GB or so in a matter of hours. In may case it would take something around 18 to 30 hours to download such a file.
hopefully with the numeric version it would possible to start the download a couple of days before the final release and on H 0 of Day 1 the game would activated with maybe a 1.01 patch to fix the final.

Judging by the d-trailer it's basically using GTA IV's engine. Not so big.

Plus don't make a big deal of PS3 games being large.

I don't care who analysed what to come up with that conclusion because it's just not gonna happen, but there is still a very vague and unlikely possibility they release the digital version like a few days before the hard copy, because that could easily make them a fair few million $$$s extra than if they just released the hard copy.

That way they stop shops from breaking street date. Release on the date digitally, then ship the boxed version the next day.

I'm surprised devs haven't started making their games modular. So it can download a little and have the player start playing then download the rest in the background.

Even with a mild internet connection you could download many hours worth of game play within an hour or less. Then while you play that for a few hours you have a crap load more of the game and would never be interrupted.

That's not possible in an open world type game

Sure it is. You simply can't access other areas yet. If you think 100% of the entire world is loaded into memory at once you would be greatly mistaken.

However, the point is, you would never even get to those areas yet before the game finished downloading more and more.

This would suck for one big reason - if the in-store version goes away and we are left with a download-only version, then there is no waiting out the stores for a few months and getting the game for half off or less. If there is no shelf space to turn over with new titles, then there will be no real reason for the game to be discounted to get rid of slow moving stock.

While what you said makes perfect sense and I see where you're coming from....at the same time, digital downloads get discounted all the time. As well as sales.

Means we don't own sh*t anymore, ... just a few 00 and 11 flying around the INTERNET, until Rockstar decides is time to shut down the downloads and servers, and years later, you find yourself glorifying Cartridges, cds , dvds, and BD..
Gaming world started to suck...
