A New GTA Each Year?

Grand Theft Auto fans, would you like a new GTA release every year?  Too bad – Rockstar won’t do it.

The Call of Duty series just came out with another blockbuster in Black Ops II, and other series have made it a habit of releasing new games on a yearly basis to appease their fans.  One company that won’t do anything of the sort is Rockstar Games with their wildly popular Grand Theft Auto series.  Why?  Rockstar North’s Leslie Benzies offered up the company’s reasoning in a recent interview with IGN:

"When we were working on GTAIII we were a much smaller team doing something new and experimental.  We had no idea how the game would be received, just a belief that what we were working on was really special. Since then we have grown into a much larger team and our games have much higher expectations. It's not just our own faith in each project we've had to repay, but our fans' too. We could easily have churned out a new version year after year without really progressing as a franchise, but if we did that, eventually the fans would lose interest. We want every one of our games to meet and exceed the players' expectations so they always want more, and as such GTAV feels like our most ambitious project yet."

There you have it.  Would you want a new GTA each year?

I prefer it as-is. Allows anticipation to build.

I prefer waiting a couple of years for something fresh and innovating than having "cookie-cutter" games like COD every year. Good titles take a long time to be developed, but it's worth waiting - just look at Fallout 3, Dishonored, Heavy Rain and so on - they all took quite some time to be developed. :-)

there are dozens of titles that pump out a new copy every year across dozens of genres. GTA doesn't need to go that route.
