The Rise:
2006 – The fledgling company is formed under the name Green Monster Games and is headed by CEO Jennifer MacLean, formerly of Comcast and CTO Jon Laff formerly of Electronic Arts. The name is eventually changed in the spring of 2007 to 38 Studios.
2008 – The lead designer from SOE’s Everquest Travis McGeathy is hired.
2009 – 38 Studios acquires Rise of Nations developer Big Huge Games from now also troubled THQ.
2010 – 38 Studios makes a deal with the The Rhode Island board of Economic Development for an approved $75 million guaranteed loan under the promise they will bring 450 new jobs to the state by the end of 2012. 3 months later the deal is signed.
2011 – 38 Studios moves into its new location, Providence, Rhode Island, and more than 160 employees start working at the new location. At this point the company starts development of two different games, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Copernicus both under art direction from Todd McFarlane. Kingdoms of Amalur was released February 7, 2012 and did well in the reviews, but Copernicus unfortunately did not even receive a release date.

The Fall:
May 13, 2012 – The state of Rhode Island becomes concerned when 38 Studios misses a scheduled payment on their $75 million loan.
May 17, 2012 - 38 Studios then tries to make a payment with a $1.12M check but later informed the state that there was not enough funds available to cover the check and failed to make payroll for all its employees that week.
May 18. 2012 – 38 Studios finally made good on its payment to the state with a wire transfer of $1.025M and an additional $100,000 from a personal check.
May 23, 2012 – Both the CEO Jennifer MacLean and senior VP of Product Development John Blakely update their Linkedin profiles to show that they have left 38 Studios.
May 24, 2012 – 38 Studios officially layoff all of its employees and reports state the company has gone the way of the dinosaur.
June 22, 2012 - For the first time since 38 Studios demise, founder and chairman Curt Schilling breaks his silence about what happened and claims he is “tapped out” due to the collapse of the company and his personal investments of around $50M he made in the company. Also Rhode Islanders will be feeling the strain as they will be paying $12M annually for the next 8 years to pay off 38 Studios creditors. It has also been stated that the Rhode Island state police, the Attorney General’s office, the U.S. Attorney’s office and the FBI would be launching an investigation into the company.
So there we have it, the fall of 38 Studios. What’s important to remember is not the amount of money that the people of Rhode Island have been left to swallow but the 400 people who are now out of work due to the closure of 38 Studios and its subsidiary Big Huge Games with no warning unless they had been watching the CEO’s Linkedin profiles.
