When I got my PS3 almost three years ago now, I was astounded at the line up that was already specifically exclusive for the console. Titles that had illuminating franchises that dated back to my own 90's childhood. I had grown up with Sony Playstation and now I had their best machine yet after years of being handled by the lovely people at Nintendo. I had come home. I decided to check out the PSN Store some time after my purchase and there was a game I had slowly become obsessed with.
Watching countless video after video on YouTube of the gameplay I was astounded by what I saw. The logo would flash up on the screen. The humorously titled name ThatGameCompany was written in a light blue tint before fading to show me a flower in a pot on a windowsill in a high-rise apartment. It was here I began my quest into Playstation Indie titles. ThatGameCompany showed me one of the first games I considered to be an artistic statement as it was described to me "the dreams of a flower living in a desolate city"; I was hooked.
So after all this time, I decided to contact the guys over at ThatGameCompany to get some answers out of them about their amazing game Flower and their upcoming title Journey that's due later this year.
QJ: I'm a huge fan of your game Flower. Where did the inspiration for it come from?
TGC: The idea for “Flower” grew organically (no pun intended) from a number of inspirations. One was to try and capture the feeling of being in a large flower field; to capture both the sense of beauty when you see them all, but also the visceral feeling of being up close to an individual flower.
If you do a Google image search for “flower” you discover photographs from people all over the world, all fascinated with this aspect of nature. Technically, it was an exciting challenge. What would happen if we took this aspect of video games that is normally an afterthought on the edge of the world – the bushes and grass – and put it right in front, and make the entire game about it?
What I really like about “Flower,” though, is that it feels like a very personal expression of Jenova’s. The story and the themes that are expressed in the game really evolved from what I see as his current interpretation of the world around him, and the game invites the player to participate in that space. It has an intimate feel to it.
