PS3_ConsoleShot1PSM had an interview with Kaz Hiral and Jack Tretton. Kaz Hiral is the president and Chief Executive Officer, Co-COO, sony Computer Entertainment America and Jack is a Executive Vice President, Co-COO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. StrikeMasterIce from PS3Forums has typed the whole article. Good job!

PSM: What do you say to the Playstation 2 owner that knows the PS3 is coming in 2005, and isn't sure what that means for their current system?

Kaz Hirai: We're into year five now with the Playstation 2 and we see a lot of life left in the Playstation 2 even after the Playstation 3 is launched. I think that a lot of publishers who were really not as aggressive in pursuing the older platform in terms of software support saw how the Playstation was in business for 10 years, so I think this time around you're going to see a lot more titles coming out for the Playstation 2, certainly next year and even beyond, obviously from first party, but also third party community as well.

PSM: What ever happened with the PS2 HDD and the media software for it?

Kaz Hirai: A couple of things there. One, we felt that a lot of those uses were suited for a portable environment, so you see a lot of that on the Playstation Portable. By the nature of the portability of the product, you going to have more uses for things like showing photos to your friends and what have you. That, as well as, quite honestly, the ramp up and the number of units were able to get out of the hard drive and the software support unfortunately did not mean we were going to have a 1:1 tie ratio with the Playstation 2s we had out in the market. We also had the redesign to the slim model PS2 as well, so, what we've done, again, in realize that these are all good functions to have, and we've incorporated them into the Playstation Portable. I think it's proven to be nice functionality that many people will take advantage of….”

It's gay.

They should give the Hard Drives for free. Not make us buy memory sticks or HDD apart.

Read carefully, he doesnt answer teh PS2 HDD questions at all. Here's what happened...
Q) What happened to the PS2 HDD and software support?

A) We thought it was great so we made it for PSP instead.

Ok not only does that not make much sense because there is no mass storage for PSP, but that is a cop out about what exactly "happened" to the PS2 HDD stuff. I for one want Sony to erfund everyones money, that is a brick for many many users. They sold us hard ware for which there is very very very limited software.

Not SONY's fault what developers wish to do with the PS2 HDD...

Refund their money? Get out. Why would a multi-national corporation do that, because developers didn't want to use it.

what do u mean unsupported...

to mass effect// yes, spring 2006

to Anonymous// It just means consoles have Disks, and did not necessitate harddisks as much as portable systems.
fault of ken mumbling:P

your opinion...well, harddisk magic or something that lets you copy games INTO the harddisk

and here in Australia, they didn't even sell it...

frankly, I don't like using harddisks on the consoles....they're not pc games, shouldn't need harddisks.

pc games have bigger market, so if you're going to make a game that needs harddisk, do that... not console...

but my opinions come down to one thing.
"GOOD GAMES"

if killzone 2 needs hdd coz of the graphics(which I know doesn't make sense) I'l buy the damn disk.

but until now, I haven't found that game. FF11? on pc, thanks.
which other game?... NONE!

exactly!

None of the 360 games announced yet even support hdd except for custom soundtracks or FF11, which already needed hdd for PS2.

atm, I go against hdd. I don't want to waste money on a console which has unnecessary hdd I won't even use much for.

to me, custom soundtrack is just totally undignifying to the game developers. it's like, "your game's musics sux"
this just shows how market research can lead to some stupid results...
like funzo in the Simpsons:P

why unsupported hdd?
it is supported by many games!
all you need is the swap-magic disc :P
then you can backup them to hdd and play them directly from hdd with faster loading times! just like on xbox
