QJ: What are your feelings on the current state of the video game industry, such as piracy, downloadable content and indie developers?
GS: Wow big question, it's hard to answer this in a succinct way! I'm going to focus more on the indie developer side of things with this one. In general, I think that the world has become a lot more open so that now ANYONE who wants to make a game has a means to make it available to the whole world. There are SO many ways to do this now, with Flash, iOS, XBLIG, PC downloadable all with very low barriers of entry.
So, the market is flooding with games, and because there is a lot of talent out there some of these games are really amazing. In some ways it's bad because there is such a flood of content that many things get lost in the crowd, but in other ways it's great because you get so much more original content and more experimental games that you would never see coming out of a big publisher.
I think about games like VVVVVV (now on 3DS) or N (which led to N+ on XBLA) or Meat Boy (which led to Super Meat Boy). These are all incredible platforming games that were made by a couple of people, and have had a real impact on the genre as we know it.

QJ: Where did the inspiration for the style of Mutant Blobs Attack come from?
GS: Initially the art style of Mutant Blobs Attack and About a Blob before it were inspired by old 50's illustrations, especially the bizarre and hilarious images that they had of the future. [See attached image]
QJ: What were some of your favourite games growing up and do you think they influenced you or MBA?
GS: I think personally I played more platformers growing up than any other genre. Super Mario World is still one of my favourite games, in fact I just re-played through it over the holidays. Also, everyone on the team has played Katamari Damacy and Gish (a very popular indie blob-based platformer) and we love those games as well. I think influences creep in from all over the place when making a new game, but these were probably some of the biggest ones.
I couldn't thank Graham Smith and the guys at Drinkbox enough. Guacamelee sounds so awesome and I highly suggest you check out their games on the PSN store and if you have a Vita help out the studio by picking up Mutant Blobs and enjoying the hell out of it. I promise you won't be disappointed.
