PS3 dev PS3Hen has made several updates to the PS3 Hybrid FW. To utilize this mod you will need to have a PS3 on CFW 3.55 as well as a hardware flasher. You will have to patch the firmware using the instructions. Use at your own risk. Updates include XMBFM which PS3Hen ported and which was released by PS3 developer DeViL303. Also PS2 game disc icon changes and recognition. If you don't have PS3 4.00 HFW v2.5 you can get it here.
How to install the 3.2 Update Patch:
Install PS3MFW Builder v0.2.1
Copy the 'change_xml_files.tcl' file to the 'task' folder of PS3MFW Builder
Put my "modded FW 4.00(releasev2).PUP" as the "Original fw" and whatever you want as the "Modified fw"
Uncheck every thing except "PS3HEN's 4.00HFW Patch 1"
In "PS3HEN's 4.00HFW Patch 1" link each file on the task page to the ones in the "Dev_flash files to be patched" folder in this package
Select "Build MFW"
Full and Complete Red Screen of Death Solution
If you haven't heard of CrashSerious then listen up. They have dropped a release for your PS3 called RSODfix Lv2diag.self v0.1, the FULL and COMPLETE "Red Screen of Death" Solution release. This is different and should not be confused with the PS3 RSOD Fix. So anyway, this means that if you have or ever get the dreaded RSOD then now you are in luck. CrashSerious used the open source PSL1GHT and this code is legal.

"Usage:------
Place this Lv2diag.self in the root of an empty USB flash dongle, and use any method to toggle Factory Service Mode (FSM) (We're partial to the second release we make today, but you can decide for yourself).
1. Copy the .self in this release to the root of a USB flash drive.
2. Rename the file to Lv2diag.self.
3. Place the flash drive in the right most USB port.
4. Toggle FSM.
5. Boot PS3
6. During FSM boot, the Lv2diag.self will execute.
Upon success, you will hear a single beep, and the playstation3 will automatically reboot to XMB. Upon failure, you will hear one or more beeps, and the playstation3 will shutdown. If you experience a failure, its likely due to your FLASH being corrupt beyond repair or a hardware problem, try it again-- but if repeated attempts at these easy instructions still yield no results... The outlook looks grim."
Factory Service Mode Tool v0.1
As if the RSOD fix wasn't enough. CrashSerious is out to do some serious good for the PS3 Scene and you will definitely want to check out Factory Service Mode Tool v0.1. So let's get to it. This tool will let a Jailbroken PS3 to not need the assistance of a JIG to go to Factory/Service Mode. In other words you can downgrade by running a PKG from the XMB. Other benefits allow you to access Factory/Service mode. And to make it better they used PSL1GHT which is open source and totally legal code.
The usage instructions are below and CrashSerious has provided a ton of other Q&A, FAQ's and information over on the source so make sure you check it out.
"Usage:
------
When you run the app it will beep once and reboot if successful. Three beeps indicates a failure, report the contents of factory.txt in this thread for help. (Factory.txt will save to the USB flash if you put on in the right most USB port of the PS3.) At this point you will come back up in Factory Service Mode (FSM). Place the Lv2Diag.self on the USB the Lv2diag.self will perform its intended purpose automatically. So be aware of that feature should you not be expecting the PS3 to boot back into the non-FSM XMB.
This app will not work on any of the "reDRM" firmwares, aka Cobra or TrueBlue CFW.
Install the appropriate pkg for your system; FactoryServiceMode.gnpdrm.pkg for CEX and FactoryServiceMode.pkg for DEX.
Run the app and listen for the beeps, you should enter FSM automatically.
Place the desired Lv2Diag.self files on the root of a USB flash drive, ensuring they are named Lv2diag.self. The one included with this release simply exits FSM. Do NOT use the RSOD Lv2Diag released earlier unless you have RSOD.
Place the USB Flash Drive in the right most USB port of the PS3.
Restart the PS3. When it boots up, you will be out of FSM.
Enjoy sticking it to the dongle makers in your own little way."
