Word on the street is that there's a new hack brewing for the PS3. It's BluRay drive emulation and if you're familiar with the Xbox scene, it rings bells of the several optical disc drive emulators available in that market such as xk3y or Wasabi360. The team working on this claims that the PCB used within BluRay drives is cracked. With this done, game backups can be played from an external storage device.

This, like many other developments that pop up out of left field, are just rumours until proper evidence appears. The only bits that have surfaced are two pictures of a hard drive wired up to a PS3 Slim. There's no proof of concept video nor brief explanation showing how the hack works. The team dropped this message along with their announcement:

No hacking , no flashing , no modding.

 

Emulation is the future. A team is currently working on a new hack for the Playstation3.

The blueray player, Sony's PCB has been cracked and costs can thus be cloned. The team probably Wasabi or Wiikey team is currently working on this for the board to connect to an external HDD. This can be downloaded games played as Wasabi360 and Xkey for the Xbox360.

A major retailer in China has also indicated that this year is released.

Very cryptic message indeed. Take it with a grain of salt. I'll be playing the "Wait and See" game that I'm so used to. GaryOPA of PS3Crunch had this to say, regarding this announcement:

Yes, this story has been going around mad on all the other 'scene' sites as RUMOR and 'front-paged'

Reasons it is NOT on Crunch is the following:

#1 - ChinaDistub is NOT involved in this, and never had any contact with source of this rumor
#2 - Cobra is not involved
#3 - True Blue is not involved
#4 - Wasabi360 is not involved
#5 - Tons of other known developers in both 360 and PS3 scene are NOT involved
#6 - The original source is 'big dutch retailer' BUT with a BAD NAME, horrible track record, know to scam its customers
#7 - The pictures are clearly nothing important, no proof that the 'blu-ray' drive been cracked at all.

I could go on and on, but it not even a good solid rumor, almost as bad as one claiming the Xbox 720 has 16 core CPU in it!

Like I said, take it all with a grain of salt.
