PSN Suffers (Another) Massive Hacker Attack |
Listed in: Hacks and Exploits Tags: philip reitinger, PlayStation Network, psn hacked
The incredible hacking scandal that slammed PSN over the spring still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of many gamers, and as of last night, things seem to have gotten worse. Philip Reitinger, the new Chief Information Security offer for Sony, has confirmed to users that a massive wave of account sign-in failures was detected on PSN last night, leaving the company to believe that a group of hackers is testing the login information to verify its accuracy.

More concerning is the fact that these accounts seem to be unrelated to the ones that were compromised in April, meaning Sony has another information leak that they haven’t even detected yet.
Here’s what Reitinger had to say regarding the possible breach:
We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment ('Networks') services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database," he wrote. "These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources."
In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks.
According to Reitinger’s post on the PlayStation blog, the hack only affects about 0.1% of PSN users. This translates to around 93,000 accounts, so while it’s a low percentage, a significant number of PSN subscribers may have been impacted by the hack.
Sony is sending emails to all of the affected accounts with information regarding password changes, and wants consumers to know that credit card information is not at risk.
Still, another breach of PSN doesn’t look great for a company still trying to convince users it’s responsible enough to protect their data.

I've faked all my info on my PSN account and if someone gets to use it and I lose all my (worthless) trophies, I don't really give two shits.
But it's rather sucky to have to create another account and start all over again.

If QJ's definition of "massive" is one tenth of a percent, I wonder what they have to say about the Xbox 360's RRoD. Lol, just trolling there but seriously, it doesn't even qualify as a "small" attack, it affected hardly anyone and was acted upon quite quickly. Well done, Sony.

Since these logins were 90% unworking details, this shows that they were stolen via the original Hacking attack on Sony and were just being used now. Perhaps purchased on the black market.

You mean as a paranoid nut. Otherwise, you're implying that nobody who buys anything on PSN could be a responsible adult.

Also, if we got paid by the post I would never. stop. posting. But you guys are right, this could be a mountain out of a molehill. Just more concern for PSN users.

Aside from that, I wonder if Sony just made this up to show their better "security".

SONY's info/PSN was not breached this time. It was either info taking from the previous spring breach or taken from some other site not associated with SONY. Shoot, the hacker could have gotten the info from QJ and they don't even know it.

Out of curiosity i decided to check other news sites like ign and they reported the same thing, using the same information and quotes the message was the exact same just worded differently because it was covered by some one else.
And guess what this was website was the only one where the comments were insulting to the article writer and website is more noticeable than comments made to the article in question

This wasn't a 'massive' hacker attack. This wasn't even a hacker 'attack.' Hell, this wasn't even executed by 'hackers.'
Very small percentage of accounts were effected at all. (Most of them were not logged into for year or more.)
And because no accounts were compromised or exploited, this wasn't an attack. It was an attempt.
And it was just someone with a lot of passwords trying to log into a list of accounts they found. That's not a hacker. That's just like calling yourself a hacker for trying to guess your friend's password on Facebook.
Keep up the good work, Sony. You're doing an amazing job with keeping the public in mind with your alerts and information you give out and how you handle things now. I've got my faith reassured in you.
