If you've been messing around with PS3 modding techniques, you probably know that despite all of their added features they can be somewhat limited. Sure staying stuck on 3.55 can give you all of the greatest homebrew games and apps, but it comes at the cost of having to deal with dodgy PSN access and holding out on all of the great features that Sony keeps adding to their flagship console. What if I told you you you could have complete access to the latest firmware while being able to play any PS game backup as freely as you would like. Odds are you would probably say I was crazy. However, thanks to a new piece of hardware arriving on December 12th, that just might be possible.

Obviously in the days of soft-modding, having to add any extra chip to your system seems like a somewhat dated idea. Still it's a pretty well-known fact that those that are willing to go through the extra hassle are going to reap some additional benefits. The PS3 3K3y is absolutely no exception. After a quick solder-free installation between the motherboard and the Bluray drive you will be able to boot any PS3, PS2, or PSOne game backup from any applicable USB device including flash drives and external hard drives It also includes a pre-loaded gaming ripping software as well, so you don't have to worry about struggling to find a way to make your own legal rips. Certainly it does sound like a wonder like this might be too good to be true, and to combat that notion the development team has released some video proof with hopes of silencing those doubters.
However despite all of the wonder surrounding this device. it does have a fair share of limitations. The biggest of which is that in order to get the initial key to operate the Key, you need to be on 3.55 CFW. It's possible you might be able to use a friend's modded console to release this information, but odds are your console will have to be endowed on its own. There are also some pretty hefty limits on what version PS3s this will work for as well. Obviously this isn't going to work for that brand new "super slim" PS3 you just bought, and it will also not work on any PS3 loaded with 4.xx OFW. If you can work past these limits, the devs contend that their mod-chip can work as a jukebox solution for hardcore gamers and can keep your game discs in pristine condition despite having some rowdy kids. Sound like a solid idea to you? Expect some more news to emerge on this by December 12th.
