Konami has revealed that players will be able to decide on their own personal blend of puzzle-solving and action in Silent Hill: Downpour. Speaking to gaming news blog Siliconera, senior associate producer Tomm Hulett intimated that the Vatra-developed horror survival title will feature a separate difficulty slider for puzzles.

"It's something the old games did, [Silent Hill] 2 and 3, then it kind of went away for some reason," explained Hulett. "Some Silent Hill fans are in it to fight creepy monsters and some Silent Hill fans are interested in it for puzzles and exploring. Having two separate difficulty settings let you do that."

The option will be available at the beginning of the game, and the developers are also looking into the possibility of letting players change the settings on the fly. Hulett also noted that the difficulty settings go beyond how hard the puzzles are. The game will use objectives to point players to where they should go next. Depending on how the difficulty sliders are set, these objectives will either show up frequently or rarely.

"If you choose easy puzzle difficulty you have a lot of objectives that tell you – you should be doing this, go over here, get this item," said Hulett. "If you have it set to hard there will be far fewer objectives. It’s not just a matter of puzzles getting harder, but the game as a whole will require more critical thinking on hard than easy."

Silent Hill: Downpour will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 this October. Konami has recently unveiled the game's box art.
