Outland release narrowed down |

Ubisoft's upcoming sidescroller, Outland, is getting close to release. This was announced by a Sony rep on the US PlayStation blog recently, narrowing down the PS3 and Xbox 360 game's release window to this spring. A rep from Ubisoft later confirmed that the same time frame applies to the game's Xbox 360 release.
Outland takes a page from Treasure's vertical shooter Ikaruga for one of its core gameplay mechanics. The game also has a color-switching mechanic -- blue and red to Ikaruga's black and white -- where the blue form will absorb blue projectiles but be hurt by red ones, and vice versa. Some of the game's platforms follow this color coding as well.
The side scroller will also feature a pair of two-player co-op modes: Story Co-op and Co-op Challenge rooms. The latter messes with Outland's gameplay rules, with one challenge in particular placing color switch controls in a single player's hands. Halfway through, control switches to the other player.
Outland won't have split-screen co-op, but developer Housemarque has a reason why they opted to limit it to online. "The reason we did online-only is because we wanted each player to have a full screen so they can see all the puzzles and not have to make blind jumps," explained producer Adam Sarasohn.
PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will find Outland on PSN and Xbox Live once it launches in late April or early May.
