The last “Max Payne” game, “Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne” came out in 2003. Eight years later, Rockstar is looking to reclaim the gritty-violence-in-extreme-slow-motion market with “Max Payne 3.” While Rockstar has been cagey with details regarding their upcoming return to the franchise, a recent preview for the gaming media seems to have gone relatively well, with both Kotaku and Joystiq gushing over the game.

The story revolves around Max’s efforts to start a new life for himself in Brazil, and, typical to “Max Payne” style, utterly failing. Before he can make it out of the country, he’ll need to clean up a misunderstanding with the New York mob, one that somehow left a well-regarded mob boss’s son dead. The game is as dark as ever, with Payne drinking himself nearly to death and struggling to deal with his past actions.

Looks like more of the same; roughing up bad guys, wreaking general havoc and firing lots and lots of guns. The only question now is whether fans’ enthusiasm for the brand has lasted the last eight years, or if Rockstar will need to sell a whole new generation of gamers on Max’s antics.

Are you excited for “Max Payne 3,” or is this addition to the franchise shaping up to be too little, too late?

Marky Mark as Max Payne has ruined this franchise for me.
