Heavy Rain creator explains lack of sequel

Quantic Dream boss David Cage has already said before that there would be no sequel to Heavy Rain. In a recent interview with Develop, he delves a little deeper into his motivation for not making Heavy Rain 2.

In a nutshell, Cage explains that Quantic Dream wasn't formed to capitalize on their successful games by milking them for all their worth with sequel after sequel. As Cage himself says, he's not in it for the money. He's here to tell a story, and the one in Heavy Rain is already over. This time, he and Quantic Dream want to move on to the next one.

"Let me be stupid for one second; I'm not in this business to make money," he said. "I wrote Heavy Rain because I was excited about it, because there was something to say. Yeah I could make Heavy Rain 2, but I've said what I've had to say about it. That's the strength of Quantic Dream, to have the capacity to create new ideas, to make something that breaks ground."

Heavy Rain has already sold over two million copies, which is quite a feat for a new IP that also happens to be a console exclusive. I (and publishers too, I would imagine) would find it kinda hard not to capitalize further on that kind of success, so I think Cage's decision to stick to his convictions is deserving of praise.

# but what about the DLC?trash80child 2011-09-28 18:36
at one time, they were planning on making 4x DLC; but only one of them ever got released. I believe the story goes, 'they got pulled off of the DLC to make it Move compatible.' Is there any chance that the rest of the planned DLC will come to light?

Okay, just one issue with that way of thinking. Sometimes it's not always about the money. If you're a fan of the game and the story, sometimes it's okay to give more to those fans without looking like a money-grubbing corporation. I would have definitely liked to have played Heavy Rain 2 and I wouldn't have thought a thing about them capitalizing on the success of the first. If they were up to Heavy Rain: Modern Warfare levels, then we'll talk.

Heavy Rain is definitely a unique game but elements of it are already being Frankenstein'd by other games so its uniqueness would only be in story telling, and there are other ways to do that.

I applaud you David Cage, Heavy Rain was great in itself but it doesn't need a sequel. Can't wait to see what new game they bring to the table.

Though I kinda wished they had taken the time to finish the rest of the extra stories, including the one where you play as the Origami Killer being the Origami Killer.

I agree the story doesn't need a sequel. The story had a definitive beginning, middle, and end. Now another story with the same (or updated) game engine would be what I would expect from Quantic Dream.

While I commend his attitude, I still find the reasoning to be rather selfish. But when it comes down to it, I'm ok with there not being a "Heavy Rain 2" as long as they choose to develop a different, equally well made game. It's not the history or the characters I necessarily want more of, it's the well written story and gripping gameplay.

I understand that they don't want to make a sequel.... but they still need to explain the scene with Madison knowing who the culprit is and who Vincent is...
