Desmond's cycle coming to a close in next year's Assassin's Creed entry

Ubisoft has been busy pumping out one Assassin's Creed game after another since the original hit consoles back in 2007. There's an in-game reason for it, though, as according to the series timeline a world-ending event is set to happen in December 2012. The focus right now is still on Desmond Miles' stealthy ancestors, but come that date it will likely shift largely to Desmond himself as his story wraps up.

"In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012," Assassin's Creed: Revelation creative lead Alexandre Amacio told gaming news site Eurogamer. "That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point."

Amacio further explained that the series' "complex and strong narrative" is semi-tied to current reality, so it "would be stupid" to bring it all to a head after that date actually passes in real life.

Just because we're approaching the end of Desmond's story doesn't mean the Assassin's Creed franchise is drawing to a close. According to Amacio, the series is all about cycles -- Altair's, Ezio's, Desmond's -- "but there's many cycles within the brand - that's the whole point. History is our playground."

Any further Assassin's Creed games won't be coiming out so soon after one launches, though, as Ubisoft is restructuring their development schedule in order to give developers more time to finish a new entry. I've started to feel that there's been too little time between releases myself, so that's some welcome news.

In my experience "usually" a long release time gives the developer the chance to make the best possible game. Usually IS the key word here though.
